and out upon the cool gallery
where he would be out of hear-
ing distance of the singer.
"Guess the sooner I-"
"Good evening, sir !"
Mr. Cromwell turned and fac-
ed a stranged, a nice-looking
young man of about twenty-
three years.
"Er-good evening," he re-
plied.
"Is this Mrs. Jaboc's boarding
house ?"
"It is that. Could I call her
for you?"
"Oh, no, not necessarily," the
stranger hastened) to answer.
"I'm just calling for a friend
who is leaving with me on to-
night's train. I'll just sit here

friend and I are to perform at
the Majestic Theater tomorrow

wanted us to practice up a bit

Mr. Cromwell, who had been
eyeing the other from head to
foot. Then to himself: "Oh,
I see it all now. He has come
after her. Well, thank Heav-
ens! Hope he keeps her. Maybe
he wil;marry her, and then I'll
get a little rest."
"Is your friend a singer ?" he
asked aloud.
"Yes, and a drn good-"
"Why, hello, Bill, ol' thing !"
exclaimed a handsome young
fellow who had just come out
on the gallery.
"Hello! Are you ready ?" Bill
asked.
"Yep! Well I'll say so! Ready
and 'rarin'! I know my stuff,
man, listen! "Oh-h- I may be
yours some da-a-ay Atta Boy!!"
"Well, I'll swear," croakedthe New Yorker, as the vaude-
ville stars began their rehear-
sal..
MEAN, MEAN PAPA!
She was very bewitching
And hot-doggish.
She coyly stood under
The mistletoe, that
"Why don't you go ahead and
do it vine."
Her eyelids closed lusciously,
Herlips pouted,
And I knew,
Oh, yes! I knew
What she wanted.
But I fooled her.
Gee! I bet she was sore
When she opened her eyes
And found I wasn't around.
