THE GALLEON
TO A WINTER TREE
Stripped of vernal vestures,
Gaunt and grim and bare,
Making frantic gestures
In the empty air,
With palsied limbs, that once were green and fair.
Do you dream of seasons
Dead beyond recall,
Slain by Nature's treasons;
Do you dream at all,
Or quite forget green Spring and golden Fall?
Glacial winds assail you,
Breezes cold and wet,
When they lash and flail you,
Do your limbs forget
Those zephyrs soft, that in your foliage met ?
Do you cry in anguish
To these sunlesp skies,
Calling Spring to vanquish
Winter ? What replies
Then hear you, in those depths what comfort lies?
What of last year's flowers,
That with fragrancy,
Opened veremil bowers
For the errant bee,
Now dead, beneath your leafless canopy?
You have seen more seasons
Waste away, than I,
Nature's secret reasons,
Hid in earth and sky,
You have perhaps discerned, and do not die.
Teach me, Ancient Brother,
Of this whispering
Voice, that says, "Another
Far more splendid Spring
Awaits beyond the clouds, on poised wing."
