Time for decisions
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE directors have
been dragging their heels on some tasks of
increasing urgency: the selection of a Chamber of
Commerce manager, the preparation of a budget
and the reorganization of the Chamber of
Commerce program for the coming year.
That "coming year" is upon us, and decisions
are not being made.
We believe...have always believed...that a
viable Chamber of Commerce organization is a
vital necessity for a growing progressive commu-
nity. Perhaps we are wrong on that...we may be
just out of step with the rest of the business
community, which apparently isn't concerned
about the situation, or perhaps is just uninformed.
In either case, a decision needs to be made.
Nan Ezzell, the co-publisher of this newspaper
and president-elect of the Chamber of Commerce,
has worked tirelessly during the past three months
to provide leadership in the reorganization period,
performing many of the duties of a full-time
manager in the absence of one, and may be at the
point of tendering her own resignation in the face
of failure to get the Chamber of Commerce board
to move forward.
Appointment of a full-time manager is, we
believe, the necessary first step...and it has not
been taken. There have been qualified applicants,
some of them men, at least two of them women
who have been passed over by the board
apparently because a woman is not considered
capable of handling the job...a judgment with
which we disagree.
But the fact remains that choices have been
available and have not been made, at a time when
action is urgently needed.
There have been other stumbling blocks...
among them a still-unavailable full-accounting of
financial resources available to the Chamber of
Commerce. One of these is the substantial annual
income from the Industrial Park lease at the
airport...a lease now in its sixth year for which
there has never been any public accounting to the
Chamber of Commerce membership.
A substantial amount of this money has gone, in
the past, to the Canadian Golf Course...and there
is some pressure to continue this. However these
are funds which should be available for any
worthwhile community purpose designated by the
Chamber of Commerce board, and funds which can
provide part of the financial resources needed
during this reorganizational period to allow the
Chamber of Commerce to shift to full-time
managerial status until a re-vitalized membership
can handle it.
Resources are available to the Board to carry out
a reorganization plan and establish the Canadian
Chamber of Commerce as a viable working
organization, but action is needed to take those
first vital steps, and time is running out. A budget
must be adopted, management provided, and
membership recruited to begin the new year
without further delay.
One available alternative, of course, would be to
abandon the whole structure and disband the

In the December 20 issue of The American, the good
doctor-turned-columnist quoted "my wacky sister" with some devet
word-pictures which she describes as samples from an "Aggie IQ

Jonestown, to bury most of them at public
expense.
It was not our affair. Those people left the
United States voluntarily, not as travelers but to
live in a foreign land. It was Guyana's problem and
not ours. We should have left them where they fell,
for Guyana to dispose of as they saw fit.
On that subject, I am also irritated at the S9
million cost figure attached to bringing the bodies
to the United States. The figure is comparable to
the cost figure which the city attaches to fire
alarms, arrived at by dividing the total annual cost
of the department by the number of alarms. On
that basis, if we had twice as many fires the cost
per alarm would be cut just about in half.
The much-quoted cost of the Jonestown bodies
includes, for example, the maintenance cost of the
airplanes. The Air Force quotes figures which say
that it takes so many hours of maintenance work
for each hour that a particular type of airplane is
flown. The figures are correct but if you start
arriving at the cost of a particular flight by
including the pay of the flight crew and the
maintenance workers you are leading yourself
astray -- they are all military personnel who are
going to be paid whether that airplane flies or not.
Fuel and a certain amount of wear are costs, that
can legitimately be attributed to the body-haul.
All of which does not affect the principle of the
thing one whit. It wasn't our affair and the United
States should have stayed out of it.

Translated, that is "a little darky in the middle of bed with nothing
over him." That one may have fallen out of favor in recent years
because of racial overtones...but it shouldn't, because it is graphic
and funny, and not meant to be offensive to anyone.
And then there's an old favorite which Nan used to translate for the
children, when they were small, to their delight...and is now ready to
perpetuate with the grandchildren. It needs only to be read
phonetically:
