like this to put a small business under.
"We had a lot of good customers at Clarendon
who paid their bills along like they're supposed
to," Ballew told the Clarendon Editor.
Ballew's story was not unusual. He and his son
had borrowed money from the banks to open the
shop...and these loans had to be paid on time.
Payrolls also had to be met on time...employees
don't like to work on the cuff. And suppliers have
to be paid on time, or they soon cease to be
suppliers.
The average small business can't afford to carry
very many of the kind of customers who "ride"
their bills for 60 to 90 days or longer...no matter
how good a credit risk they may believe
themselves to be...because, in effect, the
businessman is lending his money to these
customers at zero interest, while he is paying out
interest for that 60-to-90-days-or-longer at rates
of ten per cent or higher these days, in order to
carry them. That cost-of-money differential can
eat into profits in a hurry.
Add to that the clerical costs of bookkeeping
and billing past-due accounts...and the not
inconsiderable postage involved...and you can
understand what Bill Ballew meant when he said
of those small accounts, after re-billing them: "by
then I'd already lost."

Spur of the Moment
(Continued from page 2)
predicted. Certainly the northeast Panhandle has, and obviously
Canadian, in particular, has.
PRPC would probably like to forget that projection...almost aa
much aa certain Amarillo publicists would like to have it forgotten
that they were confidently labelling Canadian aa a "new ghost town"
back in 1954 when the Santa Fe moved its division to Amarillo. We
like to look back on those forecasts which have emaaated from
to time from the capital dty of our regional empire...and feel very
happy about them, because they have bees so consistently wrong.
