282 THE TEXAS ALMANAC.
tieth anniversary of the invention of the
telephone. It is interesting to note at
this time that the first telephone in. the
State of Texas was installed in Galveston
some time before 1879 by Col. A. H. Belo,
at that time the publisher of the Galves-
ton News. The first telephone exchange
was installed in Galveston on Aug. 21,
1879. Since that time the industry has
grown to such a point that practically
every hamlet and town in the State has
telephone communication and can reach
practically any other individual in the
United States with a network of wires
and circuits which will connect approxi-
mately 17,000,000 telephones.
TEXAS TURKEY CROP, 1926.
Th Texas turkey crop of 1926 was
laced at 850 to 900 cars by J. Austen
unter, market news specialist of the
State-Federal Market News Service. This
includes the *commercial movement only;
he places the total consumption at an
equivalent of 1,300 or 1,400 cars. He
placed the value of the entire Texas tur-
key crop of 1926 at $10,000,000.
