Tax Remissions.
Listed below are cities and counties that
have been granted tax remission since
1900:
Goliad.-All State and county taxes
were remitted to inhabitants of the "cy-
clone district" covering parts of the city
and county of Goliad, for the year 1902.
Caluse: Cyclone of May 18, 1902. Passed
by Twenty-Eighth Legislature, 1903.
Brazoria County.--All State ad valorem
and three-fourths of State occupation
taxes remitted to county of Brazoria for
a period of two years beginning Feb. 1,
1903, for the purpose of road and bridge
construction. Cause: Gulf storm of Sep-
tember, 1900, and Brazos floods of July,
1899. Passed by Twenty-Eighth Legisla-
ture.
Galveston.-All State ad valorem taxes,
three-fourths of the State occupation
taxes, and the State poll tax other than
that portion belonging to the school fund
collected in Galveston County for a period
of thirty-five years, beginning Sept. 1,
1903. Cause: Gulf storm of Sept. 8, 1900.
Passed by Twenty-Eighth Legislature for
fifteen-year period and provisions of the
act extended for ten years by the Thirty-
Fifth Legislature, beginning Sept. 1,
1918, and again by Thirty-Ninth Legisla-
ture for ten years beginning Sept. 1, 1928.
Paris.-All State ad valorem taxes, all
occupation taxes and all poll taxes, except
that portion belonging to the school fund,
were remitted for a period of five years,
beginning Sept. 1, 1917, in the city of
Paris and the county of Lamar. Cause:
Paris fire of March 22, 1916. Passed by
Thirty-Fifth Legislature.
Garrison.-All State ad valorem taxes,
all State occupation taxes and all State
poll taxes, other than that portion belong-
ing to the school fund, collected within
the Garrison independent school district,
Nacogdoches County, were remitted for a
period of five years beginning Sept. 1,
1917 to this district for the purpose of re-
building school. Cause: Fire Nov. 17, 1916.
Passed by Thirty-Fifth Legislature.
Corpus Christi.-All State ad valorem
taxes collected in Nueces County for a pe-
riod of fifteen years beginning Sept. 1,
1917, were donated to the city of Corpus
Christi for the purpose of seawall con-
struction, Causes: Gulf storms of 1875,
1880, 1883 and 1916. Passed by Thirty-
Fifth Legislature. The Thirty-Seventh
Legislature, in 1921, extended this grant
by providing that all ad valorem taxes
collected in Jim Wells, Jim Hogg, Brooks,
Kleberg, Willacy (now Kenedy), Duval
and Nueces Counties for a period of twen-
ty-five years beginning Sept. 1, 1921, beTHE TEXAS ALMANAC. 223
donated to the city of Corpus Christi for
construction of a seawall.
Aransas Pass.-Eight-ninths (about 88
per cent) of all ad varolem taxes collected
in San Patricio County for a period of
twenty years beginning Sept. 1, 1920, are
donated to city of Aransas Pass for con-
struction of seawall and breakwater.
Cause: Gulf storms of 1916 and 1919.
Passed by Thirty-Sixth Legislature.
Roekport.-AIl State ad valorem taxes
collected in Aransas County for a period
of twenty years beginning Sept. 1, 1920,
are donated to Rockport for construction
of seawall, breakwater, etc. Cause: Gulf
storms. Passed by Thirty-Sixth Legisla-
ture.
Port Lavaca.-All State ad valorem
taxes collected in Calhoun County for a
period of twenty years beginning Sept 1,
1920, donated to Port Lavaca for main-
taining revetments, restoring, improving
and maintaining harbor. Cause- Storm of
September, 1919. Passed by Thirty-Sixth
Legislature.
Freeport.-All State ad valorem taxes
collected in Road District No. 23, Brazoria
County, for a period of twenty years be-
ginning Sept, 1, 1920, donated to city of
Freeport for levee construction and re-
pair Cause: Storm of September, 1919.
Passed by Thirty-Sixth Legislatuie.
Hidalgo County.-All State ad valorem
taxes and three-fourths of the State oc-
cupation taxes collected in Hidalgo Coun-
ty for a period of twenty-five yeals be-
ginning Oct. 1, 1923, donated to Hidalgo
County for the purpose of building levees.
Cause: Floods from Rio Grande in 1904,
1909, 1919 and 1922. Passed by Thirty-
Eighth Legislature. (See p. 174.)
Wharton Connty.-All State ad valorem
taxes collected in Wharton County for a
period of twenty-five years beginning Oct.
1, 1924, donated to Wharton County for
purpose of reclamation of Colorado River
-bottoms. Cause- Floods due to raft in
Colorado River channel. Passed by the
Thirty-Eighth Legislature. (See p. 175.)
Matagord County.-All State ad valo-
rem taxes collected in Commissioners'
Precincts 1, 2 and 4 of this county for a
period of twenty-five years beginning
Octtober, 1924, donated to this territo y as
a reclamation district for the purpose of
reclamation of bottom lands. Cause:
Floods caused by great raft in Colorado
River. Passed by Thirty-Eighth Legisla-
ture.
Cameron County.-All State ad valorem
taxes in excess of 10c on the $100 valua-
tion collected in Cameron and Willacy
Counties for a period of twenty-five years
beginning Jan. 1, 1926, donated to Cam-
eron County for levee construction. Cause:
Floods of 1904, 1909, 1913, 1919 and 1922.
Passed by Thirty-Ninth Legislature.
