SUMARINE U-28 HAS
REGULAR BEAT, BUT
MAIL SHIPS TOO FAST
’ ‘
ROTTERDAM, April 19—The German
submarine “U-28,” seconding to seamen
who travel between this port and Eng-|
land, has a regular boat, which she pa-
. troto, between the Maas Lightship and
the' North Hinder. Practically every
day she Is on duty along that route
watching for the railway and cargo
steamers on their way to Hull or Har-
wich or Rotterdam. She has a number
of captures to her credit at this point,
although she has not yet succeeded in
getting any of the fast mail or railway
packet boats. Their speed is superior
and they vary their errur®* on each trip
wi as to make, it impossible for the
siibmarine to lie in wall along the way.
The following description of the pur-
suit of one of the railway steamers is
published heps:
“The ship was pounding along at
twelve knots, when sullenly there was
a flash of sunlight om the surface of
the sea. maybe two milbs away, and the
lookout .called sharply,! ’Submarine on
the port bowf
,JThere was a shabp command to the
man at the wheel and the ship chang-
ed her course. Then a quick call down
the tube and the engineer sang out to
his stokers. ’Beat her Up, hoys, U-28 is
having mother go.’ ■
“Down, the stokehold tumbled the
deckhands, eager to help with shovel
and oilcan. The waterj jtftnped in the
gauge, the safety valves showed signs
of torment, there was a smell of heat-
ed hearings, the ship began to quiver,
while the perspiring Crew made bets
with each other on tree race,
“The captain himself took the wheel.
Reside him stood the
ing with fascinated
wake which marked
submarine sailing at
cut them off- Smoke and fire stream-
ed from the funnels arid there was an
1 odor of burning paint. The iron deck
chattered- and groaned under this de-
tnands of the engines and the ship gain-
“Suddenly the captains shoulder
gave a lurch, his arms shot down, the
boy thrown off his balance fell against
the bulwarks, and the ship swerved in
a half circle on a new course. Gradu-
ally the speed rose to thirten, fourteen,
fourteen and a half knots. The cap-
tain’s face relaxed into a smile./
“What if the engine should break
down?,” thought the, boy, as his eyes
again sought that distant white wake.
In the; long stern chase the same
thought often came to .Hue captain, but
his face showed nothing hut a quiet
interest and his hands held strong on
the wheel. Smaller and smaller grew
the put-suer, until finally it sullenly
gave up the chase. Then came a call
down the tube, a heavy sigh of relief
; from the engineer, and <he men came
I tumbling back to deck.;
“ ‘Good old U-28, we’ve beaten her

The 4ause of the trouble has been in
the main because of the heavy con-
sumption of water, which has grown
remarkably iri the past few years. In
the shtiimer t|ie daily consumption runs
on an average 8(10.000 gallons a day; Irr
the winter fdom 400,000 to 500,000 As
a result the big pumps have teen kept •
at work practically all the time pushing ;
the wells to their capacity, and much i
of the time the water has been pumped ■
directly into the main reservoir from !
whichllt is pumped into the mains. At '
times, even, when ’he press was unus-
ual, water has been pumped direct into ,
the-mains from the wells, with all the I
sediment and sand stirred up in the well
by the.ipowerfui air compressors.
