CROW FLAT
Dorothy Lewis
THANK YOU!
The Bi-County Heifer Futurity would like to thank the following individuals and
businesses for their generous donations! Your support is greatly appreciated!
We have been invaded! Road and air traffic is crowded on Crow
Flat as the Schlumberger Technology Corporation crews have moved
in to do seismograph tests in the area. There is cable crossing the
roads and trucks and trailers and helicopters parked up and down the
Flat. People need to be aware that there is an unusual amount of
traffic and equipment in our area.
The Hudspeth County Livestock Show was held in Sierra Blanca
Friday and Saturday. For the first time in years, the weather at Sierra
Blanca was just right for the stockshow. It was warm and still and
very pleasant. Friday was a student holiday at Dell City I.S.D. and
those participating in the stockshow were busy getting their animals
washed, clipped, and weighed for Saturday’s snow. Crow Flat was
well represented at the stockshow. The 4-H and FFA members from
Crow Flat were Clint and Shyra Dean, Travis Lewis, Billy Brown, and
Lacy and Julia Davis. Shyra’s goat won Reserve Grand Champion.
Clint received a 3rd place with his heavy weight goat. Billy’s medium
weight goat received first place in the class and Travis’ goat was 2nd
in the class. Billy won the Showmanship buckle for goats. Julia’s
rabbit received a 4th place ribbon and Lacy’s rabbit received the 5th
place. These young stockmen are to be commended. Their dedication
and hard work was evident in the fine looking animals that were
shown.

Quentin and Dana Dean and their children, Clint and Shyra, spent
the weekend in Sierra Blanca with Dennis and Becky Walker and their
children, Kyle and Whitney. Dana is a member of the Hudspeth
County Livestock Board and she and the Board are to be commended
for their hard work organizing this annual event. Clifton and Millie
Dean came from Crow Flat on Saturday and spent the day at the
stockshow. Millie was surprised to learn that she had won one of the
raffles at the stockshow. The prize was an artistically painted rock
that was donated by Millie’s daughter, Becky Walker.
Dorothy Lewis spent Friday night in Sierra Blanca with Gary and
Kay Scarbrough. Dorothy’s son, Scott, met her in Sierra Blanca and
also stayed with Gary and Kay. Scott drove in from Clarendon, Texas
to attend the stockshow. He arrived with a pickup bed full of snow and
enjoyed throwing snowballs at his friends. Gary and Kay’s daughter,
Vayle, and their month old grandson, Connar, were also in Sierra
Blanca for the weekend giving the family a chance to meet Connar for
the first time. Andy and Nora Lea Lewis and Kearney and Sara Lewis
and their children, Wilson and Leslie, went to Sierra Blanca Saturday
and enjoyed the day with the family.
The spirit of the old time barn-raising is still alive on Crow Flat.
Several men from the First Baptist Church in Dell City came out
Tuesday and Wednesday and replaced the roof on Beth Bullard’s
house. She appreciates the time they took out of their busy lives to
help a neighbor.
Minnie Lewis returned Monday, January 24, from Las Vegas,
Nevada. Minnie and her good friends, Bonnie Larreau and Harold
McGill, left Friday, January 21. Minnie enjoyed a good visit with her
sister, Virginia Canfield and husband, Paul and her sister Joan Fine,
and husband John. Minnie reports that her grandson, Cody Lewis,
won 2nd place in the Super Bull held in Amarillo, Texas last Sunday.
Cody was competing against 100 bull riders. Cody is the son of Bill
and Debbie Lewis of Colorado.

Sunday, Dale Leith and Jonna Lou Schafer spent the day in El
Paso with Dale’s mother, Pat Leith. The family gathered at Pat’s home
to celebrate Dee Dee Babnick’s birthday. Dee Dee is Dale’s sister.
Saturday, Bobby and Pat Jones went to Alamogordo to attend a
50th wedding anniversary party for Joe Pete and Ruth Wood. Joe
Pete and Ruth are the parents of Doreen Teel of Pinon. Vaughn and
Doreen are longtime friends of Bobby and Pat. Bobby enjoyed playing
his fiddle, guitar, and mandolin with Vaughn and several other
musicians. They enjoyed a nice evening with friends.
Crow Flat has lost another friend and neighbor. Lucille Magby
Lewis died Thursday, January 27 in the hospital in Carlsbad, New
Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. “Dee”
Lewis. Lucille and Dee were lifetime ranchers in the Crow Flat and
Guadalupe Mountains area. They had been living in Carlsbad for the
last several years. Graveside services were heid Tuesday, February
1, at the Cienega Cemetery. Our sympathy to the Magby and Lewis
families.
