NEW YORK (AP) - Jean
Harris says prison is an
“unnatural” way to live and
that she is sustained only by
“the hope of getting out”
Mrs. Harris, 59, says that
she knits to pass the time and
has produced “a hundred
pairs of mittens" since
entering prison 15 months
ago to serve a 15 • year - to -
life sentence for killing her
lover, Dr. Herman Tarnower,
who originated the Scarsdale
Diet.
The September issue of
McCall’s magazine carries an
interview with the former
girls’ school headmistress and
an article by Mrs. Harris on
prison reform.
Mrs. Harris said she was in
“a state of shock for a long
time” after being sent to
Bedford Hills Correctional
Facility in Westchester
County for murdering
Tarnower on March 10,1980,
in a jealous rage over another
woman.
Mrs. Harris’ conviction by
a jury was upheld by a state
appellate court last year and
her final state appeal is
scheduled to be heard
October 14 by the state’s
highest court, the Court of
Appeals.
The former head of the
posh Madeira School in
McLean, Va., Mrs. Harris •
who also edited some
chapters of Tamower’s best -
selling diet book - is preparing
a booklet about prison life.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio
(AP) —.Actor Roy Rogers
will return to his boyhood
home in Scioto County on
Labor Day for Portsmouth’s
annual “River Days” festival,
officials say.
The Portsmouth
Recognition Society said
Thursday it gathered several
thousand signatures on an
invitation to Rogers.
Rogers, an actor in
numerous cowboy films and
on television, will participate
in the parade and at
ceremonies honoring him.
Rogers grew up as Leonard
Sly in nearby Duck Run in
Scioto County in southern
Ohio before starting his
movie career.
LAND’S END, England
(AP) — Tom McClean said, “I
haven’t felt lonely at all,” as
he stepped from his 9 - foot -
9 inch boat to claim a record
in crossing the Atlantic Ocean
in 51 days.
McClean, 39, arrived at this
port on the southwestern tip
of England on Thursday,
claiming a record for the
smallest boat to make a west •
to • east crossing of the
Atlantic.
His boat, the Giltspur, was
escorted into Land’s End
Harbor by a flotilla of larger
boats, and McClean was
greeted at dockside by his
wife, Jill, who showered him
with kisses.
McClean, a former member
of Britain’s Special Air
Service commando unit, set
out June 22 from St. John’s,
Newfoundland, on the 2,800
- mile journey in an effort to
break the record held by
Gerry Spiess, an American.

Officers indicated the pills
were sent to the laboratory
for analysis and drug charges
could be filed against the
couple depending on the
results.

said.
Linda Sue Hesskew, 21,
and her husband, Norman E.
Hesskew, 23, of New Carlisle,
Ohio, were arrested at 2 a.m.
Tuesday after the woman
solicited a reserve deputy
working undercover as a
truck driver at a rest stop on
Interstate 20.

The man was said to have

bedroom, den and kitchen
areas were entirely ransacked,
and damage was said to be so
extensive that a list of missing
items could not be made until

then opening that door and
entering the master bedroom.
Clyde Jared of 2401 S.E.
10th St. said that his 1977
Ford was burglarized between
10 p.m. and midnight
Wednesday. The vehicle was
parked on the street beside
residence during that time.
About 13 cassette tapes
valued at $52 were taken.
Cathey Drew of 1914 S.E.
12th St. told officers that
someone entered his
Volkswagen Rabbit between
4:30 p.m. Wednesday and
3:40 a.m. Thursday and took
a metric socket set from the
cargo area. The vehicle was
cigarettes, 64 watches, 168
watchbands, 20 men’s
billfolds, 12 cigarette cases,
assorted jewelry, two cards of
pipes, Bic lighters, butane
lighters, seven display knives
and one hunting knife.
An apparent burglary at
the Possum Kingdom Lake
cabin of Gordon Stovall of
Fort Worth netted thieves
about $5,000 in jewelry,
according to reports.
Stovall told officers that he
arose at 3:24 ajn. to go to
the bathroom and when he
entered the room, someone
was sitting on the toilet. He
said his eyesight was poor and
he believed the person was his
wife. The suspect then went
out through an unlocked
porch door.
Among the missing items
was a jade ring, a man’s gold
wedding band, a diamond
dinner ring, an opal and
diamond necklace, a jewelry
case, a gold bracelet, a gold
chain and a watch.

Both of the missing men
were known to be associates
or drinking buddies of
Merrill, the sheriff said.
“They kind of hung
around together. They were
both known to visit the
suspect at his campsite down
there,” Button said.

Merrill for a short period of
time,” he said, but authorities
have still not

Bobby Ray Mahan and
Larry Herman Foster, both
employees of the Hammary
Funt Co. of Lenoir, N.C.,
told officers they had filled
the fiiel tanks and had gone
in to shower. When they
returned, Mahan found
approximately 75 gallons of
fiiel valued at $84 had been
taken from the right tank of
his truck, and Foster found
that about 50 gallons of fuel
valued at $56 had been taken
from the left tank of his
truck.
Gordon Mack Roberts of
Southwind Estates reported
that a rock was thrown
through the windshield of his
pickup truck on Aug. 8 while
the truck was parked at the
Flamingo .Club on U.S. 281
South.

With his wife, Shirlee, at
his bedside, the veteran actor
died peacefully Thursday at
Cedars Sinai Medical Center
of respiratory failure brought
on by his long fight with
heart disease.
Fonda, who appeared tn
more than 80 films and
dozens of plays during a

The burglary of a private
garage resulted in the theft of
$3,976 worth of assorted

reported Wednesday.

2 charged with murder
in Hill County killings
HILLSBORO, Texas (AP)
— A second man has been
charged with murder in
connection with two
skeletons found buried deep
in an earth - filled well, but
authorities say they still do
not have a motive for the
slayings.
Jerry Van Pendley of
Cleburne was charged with
one count of murder
Thursday, after being taken
into custody Wednesday
afternoon by Waco
authorities. Peace Justice
Skinner Wallace set bond at
$50,000.
HID County Sheriff Brent
Button said Van Pendley had
at one time lived with 52 -
year • old recluse Henry
Burton Merrill, who remained
in the HUI County Jail in lieu
of $150,000 bond on three
murder counts.
Button said autopsy results
and positive identifications of
the remains still were not
available. But he said officials
tentatively have identified the
remains as Bobby Carroll
Walker and Tommy Rogers,
both of whom have been
missing more than a year.
Millsap ISD

in the Millsap Independent
School District will
kickoff Friday, August 27
with kindergarten and high
school students.
Students who
preregistered in the spring
should go to the school in
the afternoon of the 27th
to find out their schedule
and get their supply list.
Kindergarten students may
register during the day

are scheduled to come in
at 10 a.m., juniors at 11

on August 30, the first day
of school. Buses will run
