Texas Libraries.
While Texas does not rank high among the
states in the matter of support of libraries,
according to data of the American Library
Association, it has made material progress in
recent years The populous and educational
centers frequently hane excellent library facil-
ities, but there is notable lack of library
service in many small urban places and most
rural areas. There has been in recent years
an active movement to make libraries avail-
able to more people.
The largest library in the South is the
Mirabeau B. Lamar Library of the Unitersity
of Texas, with 702,429 volumes Especially
notable are its (1) Latin American Collection.,
(2) Wrenn Library of first editions, (3) South-
ern Collection, (4) Texas Collection and (5)
Stark Collection
The Texas State Library, established in
1839 during the days of the Republic, is
housed on the second floor of the Capitol It
is maintained by legislative appropriation,
and, as the name implies. is for the free use
of the residents of the state. The setx tices
and materials which include legislative refei-
ence, the use in the library of the official
state archives, advisory service in library
establishment and development. and the lend-
ing of books and other printed matter, aie
available for any group or individual in the
state. It has between 200.000 and 220,000 o
umes. including many valuable manuscripts,
documents and books relating to Texas his-
