The W. J. McDonald Observatory of the
University of Texas, atop Mount Locke near
Fort Davis, has an 82-inch reflector, one of
largest in the nation. It was built through
bequest of $900.000 by W. J. McDonald, Paris,
Texas. It is operated jointly by universities
of Texas and Chicago. Mount Locke. 6,790
feet, is snow-covered only intermittently dur-
ing winter.
