The manuscript for the Dictionary of Texas Artists, 1800-1945, an enor-
mous project coordinated by Michael Graner at the Panhandle-Plains
Historical Museum, will be sent to Texas A&M University Press soon; the
publication will list biographical information on more than 2,6oo artists
who lived and exhibited professionally in Texas, and include more than
130 color reproductions. A Scholars Council, consisting of the leading
authorities on Texas art, including TSHA director Ron Tyler, con-
tributed information, expertise, and editorial advice.
The 1998-1999 Texas Almanac Teacher's Guide is now available through
the distributor, Texas A&M University Press. The 100oo-page guide, pre-
pared by veteran social-studies teachers and curriculum writers, provides
forty interdisciplinary activities based on information found in the
1998-1999 edition of the Texas Almanac. An accompanying chart tells
educators which lessons fulfill Essential Elements requirements for
grades three through eight and which ones correspond to TAAS and
TEKS objectives. Students then use the Almanac to complete the assign-
ments, which include activities, puzzles, questions, and team research
projects. Sample lessons, including "Symbols of Texas," "Texas in
Bloom," and the "National Wildflower Research Center," can be found
on the Internet at www.texasalmanac.com. The Texas Almanac Teacher's
Guide ($9.95) and The Texas Almanac ($19.95 hardback, $12.95 paper-
back) are available through Texas A&M University Press,
800oo/826-8900.
Some very good recent books are now out in paperback. Richard B.
McCaslin's Tainted Breeze: The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Texas, 1862, win-
ner of the TSHA's Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Book Prize and a
Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State
and Local History, is available for $13.95 from Louisiana State University
Press. The University of Texas Press has issued Sam Haynes's excellent
geopolitical study of Republic-era Texas, Soldiers of Misfortune: The Somervell
and Mier Expeditions is $15.95; Caprock Canyonlands: Journeys into the Heart of
the Southern Plains, Dan Flores's handsomely illustrated exploration of
West Texas natural history is $19.95; and The Caddo Nation: Archaeological
and Ethnohistorica Perspectives, by Timothy K Perttula, is $19.95.
Also back in print is Wilbur Sturtevant Nye's 1962 Bad Medicine and
Good: Tales of the Kiowas, a collection of forty-four historical accounts from
the American Indian perspective. The stories, gathered from participants
or from Kiowas who heard them from their elders, cover a broad range of
topics, including raids into Texas. Brief, well thought out introductions
and clear translations make the volume informative and easy to read. A1998
