a survey of the Western Shoshoni, Ute, and Paiute inhabitants of the
Great Basin region. Topographical maps, photographs, tables, and word
lists, round out this exhaustive 357-page anthropological study.
The Hunting of the Buffalo, by E. Douglas Branch, originally published in
1929, is in its second printing as a Bison Book from the University of
Nebraska Press. Texans will appreciate J. Frank Dobie's 1950 introduction
to an earlier edition. Students of natural history and regional ecology will
appreciate Andrew C. Isenberg's new introduction, which includes a brief
bibliography of recent works relating to the American bison. The 295-
page paperback is $12.95.
Students of the Civil War will be happy to see William E. Dodd'sJefferson
Davis back in print. Orignally published in 1907, the 382-page biography
of the Confederacy's president comes with an introduction by Steven E.
Woodworth focusing on the staying power of the ninety-year-old study.
Jefferson Davis is available in paperback as a Bison Book of the University of
Nebraska Press for $16.95.
Gerald L. K. Smith: Minister of Hate, by Glen Jeansonne, is now out in
paperback (312 pages, $19.95) from the Louisiana State University Press.
Anyone interested in the history of Southern anti-Semitism, bigotry, and
fundamentalism in the twentieth century will find Jeansonne's biography
of Smith important reading.,384
