Southwestern Historical Quarterly
gains an understanding of the people and events concerned better than
would otherwise be the case. Such treatment is therefore most helpful to
the ordinary reader as well as to the serious student.
The documentation is well done and of real assistance, but would be
more so if placed at the end of the pages concerned rather than at the
end of each chapter.
For interesting and informative reading, this work is recommended.

California Ranchos and Farms, 1846-1862. Edited by Paul W. Gates.

Introduction, illustrations, appendix, index. $9.oo00.
The subtitle of this beautiful little book just about tells its story:
"Including the letters of John Quincy Adams Warren of 1861, being large-
ly devoted to livestock, wheat farming, fruit raising, and the wine industry."
The letters were discovered by Paul W. Gates of Cornell while working
on his book, The Farmer's Age. Among the periodicals he found a rare
American Stock Journal in which these letters appeared.
From a southwestern standpoint the book is principally valuable for
the comparisons it gives us between what was happening in California
at a comparable time with events in this area. Nowhere is any series
of first-hand experiences equal to this account of California in the early
1 86o's. Warren was interested in everything, he visited widely, and read
even more broadly.
The author is especially strong in his observations on livestock, both
cattle and sheep. Of course, no one quite equals Paul W. Gates for
meticulous, complete, and profound editing, and his eighty-one-page in-
troduction not only tells all anyone needs to know about California
agriculture at this period, but tells it better than any other historian
possibly could have.128
