A twenty-two roll microfilm edition of the Spanish Archives of New
Mexico (1621-1821) has been published under the sponsorship of the
National Historical Publications Commission, thus making accessible
to scholars source material having a significant relevance to the Amer-
ican Southwest. The Archives contain all of the extant official records
in the custody of the state for this two-hundred-year period of Spanish
sovereignty over New Mexico, terminating with the Mexican War of
Independence and the Treaty of C6rdova in 1821. Excluded are the
official land grant records which are in the custody of the Bureau of
Land Management of the United States Department of the Interior.
The Archives are microfilmed chronologically in three groups. The
calendar for each roll is reproduced at the beginning of the first roll,
and documents are located by the frame number for the first page of
each item. Rolls 1-20 contain the documents inventoried by Ralph
Emerson Twitchell in volume two of The Spanish Archives of New
Mexico (1914). Rearranged and numbered in chronological order,
the documents also retain the Twitchell inventory number. Roll 22,
entitled "Miscellaneous Spanish Archives of New Mexico," consists
of the official documents in special collections of the State Records
Center and the Zimmerman Library of the University of New Mexico
that were not listed by Twitchell. Roll 22 contains the official Orders
and Decrees.
A printed Guide which accompanies the microfilm contains a brief
sketch of Spanish administration in New Mexico, a history of the
documents themselves, and a comprehensive description of the micro-
film edition of the archives. The 182 page Calendar for the entire
collection has been printed separately and provides a detailed finding
aid. The twenty-two rolls of microfilm, Guide, and Calendar are avail-
able at a cost of $198 postpaid. The Calendar may be purchased
separately for $I.oo. Individual rolls of microfilm may be purchased
for $9.oo. The Guide will be furnished without cost upon request.
Orders should be sent to Archives Division, State Records Center, 404
Montezuma, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The National Historical Publications Commission has announced
that the Ohio Historical Society will receive a $38,31o0 grant to pre-618
