behalf of a suffering friend for whom I am feelingly interested, well
knowing your goodness of disposition has always accorded to me
whatever I have asked, and is ever ready to be exercised in behalf
of the relief of your suffering fellow men.
The name of the Gentleman is Ro. G. Waters, a citizen of the
United States & altho a young man a nobler or braver heart throbs
not in the bosom of any who has trod the plains of Texas.
My family & the Winstons generally are well & they all continue
to remember you with gratitude and affection. I expect to visit
North Alabama with my family next summer. I hope to visit you
during the time. With sentiments of esteem & respect I am

Dear Sir
From having known you for a long time as a warm and par-
ticular friend of Genl. Jackson, I take the liberty of addressing you
a few lines to enlist if possible, your influence with the Genl. in
behalf of a cousin of mine-Robert G. Waters-who was one of the
unfortunate prisners [sic], captured at Mier, by the Mexicans about
twelve months since. Robt. was born in Newberry District S.C. and,
if I mistake not you were born in the adjoining district,29 and if
so you are probably acquainted with his family, either personally
or from reputation. His Uncles John & Wm. Caldwell & Phil Waters,
were three of as firm and brave Whigs as any in the then state.
They joined the Army whilst young and remained in it untill the
termination of our struggle. If you feel authorized in lending your
assistance, you may rely uppon [sic] it your kindness will not be
misapplied. For Robt is as brave and clever a fellow as can be
found in any community besides you will confer a lasting favor on
your friend and obdt. svt. Philemon Waters. P. Waters
