private relations towards Genl Santa Anna ask your friendly aid
in behalf of Thomas S. Tatum-grandson son [sic] of James Tatum
and Grand Nephew of Howell Tatum whom I presume you knew
many years ago in Nashville Tennessee-the circumstances relating
to the capture of Thomas S. Tatum I do not know myself but give
them to you as related to me by his Brother James D. Tatum the
bearer of this letter whom I have intimately known for many years
and have always found him to be a man of strict integrity and
highly esteemed by all who know him-the Prisoner was a Citizen
of Texas before the late Wars between that government Se Mexico.
belonged to the Volunteer Company of Capt. Cameron who was
commanded by Col. Fisher and was captured at Mier and at this
time is a prisoner at Perote. The facts above stated contain all the
information I have in relation to poor Tatum-any thing you may
suggest or do in behalf of this individual will be duly acknowledged

Thomas S. Tatum, born in Tennessee, served in the Texas army
from March 6 to September 6, 1836, and was first sergeant in the
company of Thomas Stewart. He enlisted at Matagorda for the
Somervell Expedition and was "liberated by petition from many
members of the United States Congress," from Perote on August
5, 1844.28

Dear General
A particular friend of mine has a brother who has been unfortu-
nately captured by the Mexicans and has been kep in confinement
nearly twelve months. He was taken prisoner in the Mier expedi-
tion in which he enlisted more in consequence of his fondness for
adventure than of an evil disposition against the country of Mexico.
If you have an influence with president Santa Anna may an old
and steadfast friend solicit it in behalf of this young man. I ask it in
