Winter is a spectacle here but it

The opening of bids for Texas
school lauds began with the first
of September under the now law.
So far it looks as if high prices
would rule. It will be somo
weeks beforo the listing of the
bids is comploted as there is a
doal of clerical work to do.
Thoro is one thing already ap-
parent ns shown by tho bids so
far oponod and that is that the
state will obtain much hotter
prices for the land under the new
mothod of sale than had it been
sold under tho old mothod. Tho
bids for the good sections aro
highor than was oxpocted by tho
laud commissioner. As au in-
stance of this the fact is cited
that the prico bid on ono section
of land situatod in Midland coun-
ty was $11 an aero. Thoro woro
several biddors for this section
and it is said to be an unusually
good picco of land. Many of tho
bids run as high as SI and $F por
oo ro.
Somo of the prospective pur-
chasers have bid on tho land
without having boou it. A north
ern man camo into the land oflico
a fow days ago and told ono of
tho clerks that he dosired to bid
on four sections of laud situated
some where in West Texas. Ho
proforred Ward county because it
looked good to him on the map.
Ho asked the clerk to nick out
four sections lying together.
The clerk did so and tho mun put
in a cood bid on tho land paying
tho first installment of the pur-
chase prico into the state treas
ury.
"It is more than likely that
the four soctions which this man
httB puroluiBod aro covord with
sand dunos" said the clerk in
speaking of tho matter.
In most ciibob howovor tho
prospective purchaser has mado u
personal inspection of tlio laud
upon which lie is bidding. Most
of the bids so far openod are from
poraons who live in East Texas.
Vory few are from porsoiiB out-
side of Texas
It is estimated that whilo thoro
are about 55500 bids in all not
moro than 1000 tractB of
will bo Bold aa many of the
are on tho same section.
