Looking Towards tho Puturo.
Tlio old your is fjonu lll(' "

Tho now year is coino mid all
moil nro glad.
It !h ii hoason of gladiiDHi and
rejoicing. Tim world HturtH into
tho now yoar full of hop" and
with intioh oaiiHo for congratula-
tion. Tho signs of tlm Union in-
dicate that tho vo-hl grown hot-
tor. Thorn am thonu wo know
who will dony that this ih tnn1
yot if tlioy will hut broaden their
scope and look for those thingH
which aro good and not for those
which aro had they will huo nioro
roadily that this ih indisputable.
Diplomacy Iiiih won several im-
portant point b within tho old
yoar. Those includo a number of
casca in which points concerning
tlm peace of tho world woro at
Htnko. A nitmhor of iiiHtuucoa
whoro muttorH of world-wido im-
portant havo houn submitted to
hoards of arbitration might ho
citod for oxamplo. Tho gonoral
public howovor reads tho nows-
papora ao much now that thin
woro Btiporlluous. Diplomacy
has a number of taaka before it
for tho your just ushered in.
Among thorn is tho rotation of
tho South to tho nogro or rather
what tho northern republicans
who hold tho roins of government
will do to tlm isouth for having
triod to purify its ballot and
muko its elections in reality a
voice of tho people and not to ho
controlled by tho party having
tho most money.
Thoro aro a number of other
quoations to bo solved by tlm poo-
plo through their duly accrcditod
representative during tlm ensuing
year.
Wo of .San Angela have these
things and nioro to think about.
Tho pooplo of this city havo a
number of moaauros which uhotild
recoivo thoir boat attention dur-
ing ninotoon-fivo. Through tho
City Council and tlm Business
Club an opportunity exista that
is not had by other towns .
Through tho progressive spirit of
tho pooplo of San Angelo many
thinga are possible.
Now thoro ia tho matter of freo
dolivory. This iniportiint meas-
ure can bo secured if tlm right
effort is niodo to induce tho peo-
plo of tho city to comply with tho
requirements of tlm Postal De-
partment. Tho Press boliovca
that tho pooplo of this city are
more progressive than those of
any city in tho state the sioof
San Angolo. The Press bolioves
that tlm peoplo of thia city will
roadily comply with tho nocossary
requirements whouovor tho matter
is proporly presented to them.
And hero is whoro diplomacy
will havo to got in its work. San
Angolo people will do ton tunes
moro for persuasion than they
will because it is required of
thoin. Tliov will build sidewalks.
Thoy will grade stroots. They
will do whatever their hands dud
to do if thoy aro convinced that
it is for tho host intoreata of tlm
city at largo. Thoy aro already
convinced as to tho merits of the
freo dolivsry sorvico and will do
thoir part when tho mutter is put
fairly and squaroly up to them.
Now lot's do this thing. Wo
neod bettor aidowalka. Wo need
to havo tho stroots named and tho
liousoa numbered for our own
convonionco if not for freo doliv
ory. Tho city is growing ho rap
idly that it is essential to our own
woll boing that those things woro
done and that at onco. Property
ownors havo tho intorost of tho
city at honrt as nuioh so as any
ouo nnd it is to bo oxpectod of
thorn that thoy do as muoh or
moro than anyone in behalf of tho
best interests of tho city. And
tho Press believes that they will
do it. The Press believes in tho
peoplo of San Angolo. They are
alivo to tho needs of the city and
will do their best for it. Thoy
havo over boon so and it is plausi-
ble to look for tlmm to do thoir
purl when called upon.
No lot'a not any that thoy ahull
do bub rather lot lis go to thorn
in a kindly way and request that
thoy comply with tlmHo require-
ments A largo number of them
will coino through. Those who
refuse can bo forced into line
later on when all efforts at per-
suasion have failed.
Iliosc Rtillrond Rumors.
There has boon such a large
amount of hot air erupted coi.-
corning the different railroad
propositions that the Press ia
loath to take tho question up
again. Mill wo had rather be
barking up the wrong treo than
be caught napping. So hero
goes.
Word comes from Galveston
from a newspaper with unusual
facilities for getting at tho bot-
tom of things pertaining to rail-
road and especially Santa Fo
news that tho cut-oil' is in reality
to be built within tho coming
year. A good deal of speculation
is being indulged in by the vari-
ous towns to bo affected by tins
now road. Some of them think
that Colonial! will got tho cut-oil'
while othors say Mallinger. Somo
oven auggoBt that San Angolo
stands a good chance of being
made the junction point for tho
now and branch lines.
It aeoiiia to tho PreBB that hero
is a place to put boiiio of San An-
gelo's energy and aoino of tho
money that was to havo been
given as a bonus to tho Orient.
Wo jould oxpoct nothing bettor
for Sun Angolo than this. Wo
could tie to no bettor peoplo than
the Santa Fo. What's tho matter
with gottini; busy und getting this
business down to whoro wo could
see moro about it?
Thou thero'B tho otiier talk
about the Aransas Pass coming
on further north. Wo ought to
havo that road on gonoral princi-
ples und moro especially if San
Antonio will join us in trying to
got it to coino our way. It would
certainly bo to San Antonio's
best interosta to usaist us in any
way sho could oven to tho matter
of digging up a hit.
Sun Angelo is within Sun An-
tonio's natural trade torritory
and it would pay tho latter city to
get a connecting lino built oven if
aim had to pay a good still' prico
for it. What goes to n grout many
of tho othorTcxuB cities would go
to San Antonio if wo could only
got down thoro without going all
around the globe to accomplish
that foat.
Tho Oriont peoplo say that
work will begin on their lines
north of Sweotwator at an early
date. Thoro sooma to bo room to
boliovo this. At any rate wo all
hope that it is true and will bo
found ready to do our parts when
work doos begin bo it howover
long delayed.
Now with all this can wo not
got at least one of theso linos?
Other towns aro going to put
forth every effort to tako thom
away from San Angelo and wo
should bo wido awako to tho situ-
ation. Let tho business men and
proporty ownors put on thoir
studying-caps and see if they can
not evolve something out of these
rumors.
The noxt exposition will bo
hold at Portland Oregon noxt
yoar and will bo commomorativo
of tho Lewis and Clark expedition.
Tho groat north-west is ono of tho
moat intoroBting sectiona of tho
nation and will doubtless draw
very largo crowds.
And now that tho now year is
woll begun it might bo woll for
San Angolo to nscortain if thoro
is anything doing in tho wry of
doublo daily Borvico and 'thnfc
now dopotso badly noodod.
Very fow of tho readers of tho
Proas have seen or heard of tho
way this papor and city got roast-
ed nt the hands of tho editor of
the Southwest Toxan of Ozona in
a recent issue of that interesting
paper. Kor their bonoflt tho
Press cut la attention to the fact.
The roast wan caused by the
utterance of tho Press to the
ofi'oet that tho prohibition us hail
today in Hrownwood ia worse
than any form of saloon. Tho
roast is interesting reading
and us tho Texan expected to got
somo advertising out of it and not
wanting to disappoint it the

San Augeln merchants enjoyed
a phenomenal business during
Dccoinber and are ready to no
uheud with tho now year full of
courage und energy. San Angolo
business men are tho most pro-
gressive of uny in any town the
sizo of San Angolo and the peo-
ple have good reason to bo proud
of them and their efforts towards
the upbuilding of tho town.
Tho Cur of Russia seems to
havo his hands very full. To-
gothor with the JupancBo war and
tho constant demands which aro
boing mado for intomal roformB
it would seem Hint his autocracy
islikoly to bo confronted with
somo gravo problem boforo they
aro all wiaoly Bottled.

gation these days. Wonder if tho
