A SAMPLE OF THE ROT
Sent to Outside Papers by Texas Cor-
respondentsListen to ills
Tale of Woo.
When a Texas correspondent
sonds out a notico of a storm in
which flvo people lost their lives
it appears in tho paper as 500
lives lost. If it is a fire that
causes $5000 dollars damago it up-
poarfl in tho outside papors to
havo been a $50000 blazo. There-
fore as tho rulo of oxagoration
sooniB to bo pretty well adopted
by theso correspondents tho fol-
lowing from Austin to tho Drovors
Journal will bo no surpriso in
West Texas whoro the real facts
are known. Under dato of 10th
inst. tho correspondent says:
"Tho recont decision of the stato
Supremo court invalidating con-
solidating leases and placing on
tho market more than 2500000
acres of grazing lands has struck
a death blow to the cattlo raisors
of Texas. Hundreds of flections
of theso lands are being filed up-
on each day by actual settlors.
Tho ranch moti own tho altornato
patented sections of land and had
under loaso the intervening school
sections. It is impossible to
fence each section Boporatoly or
graze satisfactorily cattlo Jointly
with a number of small holders.
"Struck a doath blow to Toxas
cattlo raisors" indeed I Perhaps
a tow ranchmen will bo injured
temporarily by this decision but
as for its being a "death blow"
or anything akin to a death blow
its far from tho truth.
Toxas ranchman will movo
right along and continuo to pros-
per though this lap lease business
will learn a fow of them that tho
straight and narrow path is tho
best road to follow and that own-
ing thoir pastures is tho best
solution of a problem that mu&b
bo sottlod rightly ono time or an-
othor. Truth is there are comparative-
ly few ranch men ofi'eotod by this
decison and nono of thoso ofVoctod
have received anything near a
fatal blow But as boforo stated
thoro is nothing but some such
exagoration to bo oxpected from
a Toxas correspondent especially
an Austin correspondent to an
outsido paper.
Even Snake Meat Is Scarce
"Since snake skin has become 50
fashionable in wallets belts and ci-
garette cases" said a zoo keeper
in one of the big Eastern cities re
cently "wc find rather a dearth of
snakes each month not for exhibi-
tion purposes but as a food for
many of our most valuable speci
mens are canibals and will eat noth-
ing but their own kind. Well up
to a year ago men visited us rccru-
larly with snakes for sale and we
had no difficulty in buying all the
pmes' and 'blacks' and 'garters'
we desired at from 5 to 20 cents a
piece according to size. But now
these men sell their snakes to tan
ners and get for them three or four
times more than wo can afford to
pay. So I don't know what wc are
going to do for snake meat unless
wc start a farm and in the future
grow right here the food snakes
that we need."

Indited to two nieces;
A Song of the Soul.
Great and glorious power that guides
us
Let mo sing this song of pralso
Uplifting my soul to the Lord
And bonding It to Thy ways
Help rao Oh Lord with wisdom
To daro and do the right
Grant mo Thy gracious blessing
And load me in tho light.
I pray to Tlico at early morn
To load mo through each day
And bog for Thy forgiveness
If I falter by tho way.
Tlicro was a little maiden

To tako somo quiet obscure road
For tho world at largo is nonost
Yet full of shady men
Just keep your wits about jou
And don't run foul of them.
If you do why just remember
Nature rules from earth to sky
Insects live on one another
Largo fish tho smaller fry.
It's tho samo in human nature
Many types of men you'll find
So when ycu make a vonturq

Beautiful as a Poem.
Is religion truo? I don't care.
But if it is a lio it is tho
most beautiful ono over told; ono
from which truth itself might
learn. Could wo exist as.jv nation
without it? Franco tried it.
Does it do any harm? No I Then
why destroy it? Don't. It is as
old as civilization.' It was apart
of our fathors' lives. It was all
our mothors 'all oxcopt tho part
wo filled. Wo havo beon sung to
sleep a thousand times by its
hymns. Wo aro bottor mon und
women now whonovor wo hoar
thoni sung. They are joined to
tondor emotion. It has mado
mnny a man hotter nnd happier
more honest tender nnd forgiving.
Many a tired man or woman lias
lain down in its shade to awaken
nobody knows whoro. Don't des-
troy it. Why nino tenths of tho
mothers in America boliovo in it.
Tliatjs enough for it. It has been
growing on our hearthstone- for
ages. Lot it stay thoro. It cant hurt
you. It is such a loving religion
What will you give in its stead
if you tako it away? Philosophy?
What are you to do whon tired and
homo sick? Lovol Earthly
loves aro so selfish. It is such a
beautiful dolusion ; don't destroy
it. Weavo tho silver threads to
reach down from tho star of Beth-
lehem into tho goldon woof of

drils around the bare walls of our
lives and covor up tho jagged
rough comors and unsightly places

Alaska Salmon Bottor Than Gold.
"Alaskan salmon is worth more
to the United States than the gold
in the territory" said Mr. J. C.
Callbreath a salmon packer of Fort
Wrangle to a Washington inter-
viewer the other day. "The gold
supply will be exhausted in time
but tlie salmon will always thrive
there if the government take3
proper care of the fish. The people
of the United States do not realize
how enormous the salmon packing
industry is in Alaska. There arc
probably sixty canneries in the ter-
ritory and the total output of theso
last year was 100000 cases or about
4800000 pounds of canned salmon.
The big canneries send their pro-
ducts to the United States by the
shipload."

Now the Immigrants Havo Monoy.
There was a time when the im-
migrant was looked upon as a poor
person who had escaped from his
own country to take his chances
here without a penny to start with.
To some degree the law has change
ed all that and to be admitted an
emigrant must not be a pauper.
The immigration officials in Now
York arc amazed nowadays at the
"wealth" of most of the new ar-
rivals especially the French. When
the immigrants are examined they
arc asked to show what money
they have. Some of them arc craf
ty and do not show all they have;
others are more trusting and wil
lingly display their petty hoardines.
The money is carefully counted a
record taken and restored to tltem.
In the past four weeks 57175 im-
migrants were landed at Ellis isl
and. They had or at least they
showed to the examiners sums that
footed up $811013.
