COLLECTORSHIP.
An -Ex-Townsman oT the Pres-
ident Seems' to Have
Good Backing-.
Petitions are now in circula-
tion in several counties ad-
dressed to President McKin
ley asking the appointment of
Mr. Emmor Crew of Waller
county to the office of collec-
tor of the port of Galveston
and some of these documents
are numerously signed. .
A copy - of the petition sent
from Waller county has been
sent to the News. It contains
over five hundred names in-
cluding many leading demo-
crats. The News is informed
that President McKinley wrote
a personal letter to Dr. John
Grant asking his services in
behalf of Mr. Crew. .
Mr. Crew is an ex-townman
of the president and they are ac
quainted. He is backed by
Dr. Barr a next door neto-h-bor'of
Mr. McKinley and the
congressman from the Canton
(O.) district and therefore
Tvould seem to have a strong
pull. Mr. Crew started the
project of.shipping melons and
other early vegetables in car-
load lots to northern markets
from Texas and is known as a
horticulturist and live business
man. News.
