the appointment of Mr. Maris as col-
lector of customs at Brownsville
but the result of the conference is

Congressman Ilawley and Eddis
Green are backing James Durst and
W.N. Linton is also being pressed by
local influences. The contest be-
tween Messrs. Maris ahd Durst is so
close that it is quite possible that a
compromise may be made upon

dant amusement for tho excursion-
ists an open air baile with fire-
works and other accompaniments on
Saturday night and last night a
grana circus "funcion" by the Mora-
les company another baile and
more p)rotechnics. Refreshments
were abundant and cheap and a
good band of music helped to make
things lively. During tho day jes-
terdaj the excursionists eujojed
boating and bathing etc. The ex
cursionists returned by this morn-
ing's train.

Ex-County Surveyor of McMulIen
County Curmeisterj now an attorney
at Tilden spent several dajs in San
Antonio this week conferring with
the railway offlcorS) and was a guest
at the Southern Hotel. He reports
the chief engineer and corps in
Tilden platting depot grounds etcu
and planning tho best way to enter
and leave the tovn for San Diego.
The engineer crops will not reach
San Diego by the 21st. so the meet-
ing there will be poeponed until
they arrive.
The general oinVers are planning
to follow up the surey and meet
the people along the line within the
next few dajs and to examine the
wholo line from Sari Antonio to
Brownsville.
