A COTTON-GINNERS CON-
VENTION TO DISCUSS
THE ROUND BALE.
The Manufacturers' Record
of this week in discussing the
need of better baudling for cot
ton say&i
"A call has been issued for a
contention of the cotton grow
ers of Texas in Waco on Jan.
25 IS97 for the purpose of or
ganizing a State Ginners' Asso
elation and to consider the
effect to round bale system will
have upon the ginning busincssj
and other subjects of minor
importance The call is signed
by Charles Bainster of Waco
and eleven other ginuers of
Central Texas."
Tbis will we believe be the
first gathering of ginners called
for the purpose of discussing
the influence of the cylindrical
baling system upon the present
methods of gihniDg and com-
pressing. .The Manufacturer)'
Record has followed this new
baling system closely since the
establishment of the iirst ex
perimeutal plant two or three
years ago and it is inclined to
accept the opinion that it will
mark as great a change in cot-
ton handling as the harvester
and self binder made in wheat
harvesting. For years the need
of better handling and better
baling of cotton has been real
ized but no improvement has
come in sight except the round
bale. If that can be madH to
fulfill the claims the people in-
terested in bringing it bnfore
the public a long step will
have been made toward giving
to cotton handling the benefit
to of advancedjnodern methods.
So far everj'ing seems to in
dicate that this system is a
complete snecess and should
this prove to he true the South
will necessarily adjust itself to
a cuaiige uiai win mean an
enormous saving as compared
iviih the wasteful methods of
the present. Every improve
merit in cotton handling and
every deeieas in the cost of
jiinniug compre;sing.inaurauce
and transportation strengthen
theSottth's control of the world's
cotton markets and in all their
wide ramifications finally inure
to the benefit of the benefit of
the grower and thus to the
benefit of the whole South.

Washington D. C Jan. 2S1
Society circles are in a flut-
ter over the prospective resid
ence in- Washington during
the remainder of the present
social season of Mr. Cornelius
Vanderbilt and family of New
York. Mr. VanderbuYs ap-ent
has just Ileased the Lowery
mansion at the northwest
corner of Vermont and K
street for three months and
the Vanderbilts will take pos-
session early next week.
Mr. Vanderbilt will bring
his entire New York house-
hold including cooks and
servants and will also bring
twenty horses six coachmen
and four grooms together
with ten or twelve carriages of
various styles. It is said that
several other wealthy members
of what is known in Nev
York as the Vanderbilt set ard
looking for housds suitable
for entertaining purposes to
which the Lowery mansion is
so admirably adapted and
that others of the same circle
are securing apartments at the
rlinorton and other uptown
hotels. The Vanderbilt house
will be another addition to the
larp;e establishments of Sen-
ator Brice Mr. L. Z. Letter
and Mr. Geo. Westinghouse
i and will be probably formally
opened widi a reception and
dance.
'I he coming of Mr. Vander-
