The venerable Peter Cooper of
New York is very sick
Senator Lamar is at Jack ou ami
tlicOIississippi legislative caucus will
be held today
The Mississippi legislature is In
session autl Lamar reads bis title clear
io another term in the U S senate
A New York legislator is posnij as
the wonder of the new year He ac-
tually declined a free pass on a rail-
road
Wcaiied with fruitless attempts to
suppress the social evil in Philadel-
phia the authorities of that city now
propose to introduce the license sys-
tem with medical supervision
And now the news come from
Austin that the Goernor has bought
a farm thus vindicatim the legend
emblazoned in his book tiiat civiliza-
tion begins and end with the plow
A claim of 9S ceuts clotcd a store in
Fall lliycr Mass and placed a keeper
in charge The owner was obliged to
give bonds of 3u0 to dissolve the at
tachment and employ counsel to
defend him in court
Besides having the Alamo military
headquarters and other ood things
Sau Antonio has coal at H 50 per ton
Vc dont know how it is done but
such Is the fact Such advantages are
appreciated in winter weather
Some twenty cases of lire caused
by the contact of the telephone wires
with the conductors of the aerial
electric light have occurred within
the last few days iu Philadelphia and
the authorities are taking precaution
ary measures to prevent such lires in
future
There were some sick people in
Dallas New Years morn when they
arose and found that on the night
previous the Chicago Texas and
Mexican Central railroad had com-
pleted its fiftieth mile of track There
was a V 0000 subsidy bonus involved
which Dallas will now have to pay
According to the Dallas Times
Judge Norton waves his Henry Clay
cane around his his bead shakes his
yard of hair to the breeze and yells
iu the last issue of the Intelligencer
to the republicans of Texas Dang
you do you propose to commit hari
kari He alludes to their talking
about going into the independent
movement
The building of railroads in Mexico
is said to cause a superstitious panic
among the Indian inhabitants In
some places they regard the locomo
tive as a sanguinary god think its
whistle a scream for blood and expect
to bo sacrificed to appease its wrath
This idea has caused great numbers
of people to flee to the mountains At
Pueblo it was believed the fat of dead
Indians was used to oil tiic maihiues
A breach of promise case in Illinois
will present a novel question for legal
decision The plaintiff was a good
looking girl when the engagement
was mado Then smallpox disfigured
her face and the defendant declined to
marry her He claims that iu view
of her deterioration iu personal
appearance since he made his promise
he is not iu law or honor bonnd to
keep it They have some mean fel-
lows in Illinois
The G C and S F railroad in-
augurated the new year by reducing
passenger rates to four ceuts a mile
Other roads will of course be com-
pelled where competing lines to fol-
low euit and thus after years of
waiting lexas begins to realize some
of the advantages of railroad compe-
tition To the credit of the Texas
and St Louis road it should be re-
membered that it was the first road
iu the state to give lower rates from
five to three ceuts a mile fully six
months ago
Owing to the prevalence of small
pox in Wisconsin the state board of
health recently established a vaccine
farm near Fond du Lac Within the
past two weeks the farm has produced
some 70000 points of puie vaccine
Tirus These are used not only iu
Wisconsin but in the adjoining ftatcs
A few days ago twocar loads of hcif
ers from New York were received
upon the faini Some of the animals
yield as mauy as 1000 points other
giyo none at all This source of a
conbtaut supply of pure vaccine has
proved to be of the greatest service
in all large cities where it is used to
counteract the spread of the small-
pox
One of the closing seusatiom of the
old year at Chicago was the strike on
December 31st among the employes
of A TStewart Co s dry good
house Over eighty buyers book-
keepers messengers salesmen and
other clerks informed the manage-
ment that they would remain no
longer with the houso at auy salary
Among this number the salaries have
ranged irom f500 to f7 j00 per
annum The question has not been one
of salary however but of treatment
The original founder of tho house
the dead merchant priucc himself
was ahvsys most autocratic in hi
dealings with employes and was
known as fhc whiteslave driver
of the dry goods trade When
the firm opened the Chicago
branch house in 1877 the same policy
was followed AH their people even
the heads of departments were en-
gaged from day to day and liable to
dismissal at the caprice of the mauagcr
at a minutes notice It is said that
men have found themselves thrown
out of a situation without any pre-
text whatever except the whim of the
manager consequently there has been
a very bitter feeling engendered The
strike for rights not wages is the
filial result and the men who have
determined not to submit to the
tyraiiuy of A T Stewart Co will
eeek for employment iu another field
A ROUND MILLION FOR GAL
ALSTON
Vc present elsewhere tho full text
of a bill introduced in the senate be-
fore the holiday recess by Souator
Plumb of Kansas appropriating one
million dollars to deepen the channel
over the bar of the harbor of Galves-
ton The language of the bill is evi-
dence that the broadminded senator
from Kausas has an adequate concep-
tion of the situation lor the few terse
sentences grouped iu ttie preambles
of the proposed enactment tell the
whole story not alone of the needs of
a vast section but the possibilities of
the southwdi with deep water at the
metropolis Of Texas It is hard to say
what fato a waits Mr Plumbs bill The
south will have to light figuratively
speaking for anything liberal from
this congress Add to this the re-
ported fact that tho Louisiana con-
gressmen iu house and senate arc
hostile to the proposed appropriation
and one can readily imagine that Gal
cston will be extremely lucky if she
gets tliis round million dollars at th u
session Wc have great confidence
however iu the ellicaey of Senator
Plumbs friendliness to tne measure
Coming from a Texas senator the bill
would have undoubtedly been sub
jeeted to sharp antagonism It is best
tor all concerned that thcro is a re
publican ami a westoru senator ready
and willing to meet the responsibility
of bringing the matter before congress
and championing it when introduced
It was eminently proper that the im
portance of such national assistance
should be recognized by a senator
from some other slate than Texas
The Louisiana delegation wc learn
aro uruiug that a million dollars will
be a mere drop in tlte bucket that it
will take untold millious to secure
and maintain a channel of more than
twenty feet depth These are quer
ulous and interested propositions
superinduced no doubt by the rather
unnecessary apprehension that it
Galveston gets liberal aid the Missis
sippi river improvement schemes may
not fare xo well as Louisiana congress
men desire Naturally Louisiana and
Texas ought to so hand in hand iu
their efforts to develop the
iuterests of tlieir respective sections
There need be no apprehensions
however but what such objectiou or
arguments will be refuted hen the
Plumb bill comes up for discussiou
TheIexas delegation will be prepared
to answer them intelligently and
thoroughly tnd if this cougrsss has
the requisite breadth of conception to
grant the proposed appropriation it
will be but a bibf while compari
tively before we shall have here upon
the Texas coast a port adequate to the
needs of a section whose iuteiets are
not second to those of any other part
of the country A million dollars iu
a lump will do twice the good of the
same amount doled out through
three or four years Any meas
ure that is calculated to pro-
cure permanent deep water at Gal
vestou is a beuetit to the entire state
of Texas There is no local oectiou
alistn potent enough to cause right
thinking Texans to feel otherwise
and viewing the matter from this the
only true standpoint Mr Plumb will
receive the hearty thanks of Texas
for his friendly iutcrcst and efforts in
this matter If cougress will grant
the million dollars we think engineer
Mansfield will undertake to show the
Louisiana congressmen that it will he
something more than a mere drop iu
the bucket
A YEARS WORK
From the Railway Ag of the 30th
ultimo we are enabled to present a
compilation of interesting facts and
figures with icfeieuce to railroad
building in the United States during
the year ju t closed The exhibit is
doubly interesting to the Texas read-
er for it shows that Texas moie than
doubled any other state iu the union
From the condensed table which is
presented below it will be teen that
the aggregate number of miles con-
structed were 8 12 As a matter ol
fact the real tigures will be larger as
on a number of roads the elonug re
turns for the jear were not all in
when the totals were made up There
is every reason to believe S500 miles
were built The actual ascertained
figures are as follows

It will be seen from the above that
railroad buildiug was carried on in
fortytwo states and territories Tin
number of lines under construction
was two hundred and fiftyeight As
compared with railroad building the
year previous there Is a balance ol
fully 1300 miles in favor of lbel The
actual figures tor Texas should be
about 1500 miles of which probabl
1200 miles were built by the Gould
system Estimating these fifteen
hundred miles at a taxable value ol
10000 per mile aud wc have T15000
000 added to the taxable values of the
state during lsl The rolling stock
and other apprutcuaiices of the roads
will increase this amount to several
millions more probably > COO0OO00in
all These arc very cheering facts and
figures illustrating as nothing else
could the wonderful growth and de
velopment of this banner state of the
south There is every reason to be-
lieve the year now upon us will wit-
ness a steady continuance of activity
iu railroad building No less than
twentytwo lines of road have ex-
tensions and new enterprises in view
to be pushed for all they are worth
during 18S2 making it by no means
improbable that January 1883 will
find Texas he third state iu the union
ifi point of railway mileage

It is au expensive thing to convict
murderer nowadays but when the
prisoner at the bar Happens to be the
assassin of a president the cost of
prosecuting him swells to alaiming
proportions In the Guiteau trial the
associate counsel Judge Porter and
Walter D Davidgc are expected to
charge 25000 each for their services
Nobody expects that they will do25

get tho money simply because the
