We left Waco on the n m traiu and
after a pleasant run of an hour and
half through a region strikingly alter-
nated with timber and fertile prairie
lands reached the lte for the new town
or Mount Calm The location m a verj
pretty one and the adjacent section ap-
pears to be growing rapidly in popula-
tion and wealth Iu approaching the
place from either direction the scenerv
forever changing and yet alwa > s beauti-
ful is Mich ni the eve never gronH
weary in looking upon Immediate
south and cast upon a commanding
eminence is situated the present Milage
if Mount Calm constituting he lead
ing feature of a landscape of surpassing
liveliness The new town can certain
boast of veiy rare plrvsienl advantages
is a place of residence and
no think too that with the
numerous wellstocked and wellimprov
ed faimsm plain view forming it broad
mil deep Mibstratum of substantial
wealth and prospent that it can boast
of a population in its icinitj eminent
ly worth of the advantages sutrouml
mg it and we mav rcascmabh expect
this embrvo town existing at piesent
bv the grace of the mapniaker to
speedil become as spruce and inden
tions as a country belle in her Hundi
ittne And the time may come in tin
neii future when its citizens will be as
proud of it as the Arabs are of Damas-
cus To one who has lived lung in the
slowmoving cities and towns of the
older southern stateH the rapidil v with
which these railroad towns nic built is a
miuroe of constant astonishment
With tlie accessions fiom Coi

hoio the cloud attending
the sale ninibeusl something ileal one
hundred and at 10 o clock elovernor
Hubbard came to the front and in a
few sparkling and welltiniLil remarks
ciplamed the trims of the sale
at the same time inspiring those
interested with bnovant hope fnlnes as
to the future of the prospective new
town lleassuicil them that there was
no daiigei of the Gould sstun nbsoili
mg this mad and while this conipanv
did not entT the lield to make wii upon
other j it would neccssaril bring about
such competition as would instiie rea-
sonable tanlV rates Mr H > JiaKev
of Tvler the auctioneer then took the
stand and the bidding at once
became stunted the liisf choice
of tlie building lots bringing
Sllld ind suliMMpieut sales langmg
all thewH down to SO At 2Hltlie
train from Wieo arnved and Governor
Hubbard and Messrs Frost and Jiarr
the company s attoinejs closed the
sales and returned to orsieana leaving
cr man desirable lots unsold Tlie
aggregate of the sales amounted to
SJOIO and taking into consideration
thesmall attendance was ver > gratif

feature of the occasion to us was the
pleasiirr of forming the acquaintance of
Mr II Z Hamilton of the Tvler Demo
cJiit and Reporter who as a traineil
journalist and able editor caters to the
public with exceptional nbiiit and
aptness A good state of feel-
ing prevailed throughout the dav and
we are sure all spent a delightful time
for nothing that was necessar to con-
tribute to the pleasure of the conipanv
was left undone by the citizens and
railroad officials The following list ex-

About 030 oclock yeste diiy evening
lie crv of lire was heard on Austiu
avenue and a few seconds afterward
the lire gong was tolling the alarm The
fire companies and water works gave a
prenipt response When the liremeu got
their apparatus around on Austin street
they found the smoke issuing from
the building iu which ltiveires
drug store and Itagland s jewelry store
is located Smoke was also issuing
from the windows of Jennings t Bakers
law olliee on the lloor above At the
time the lire was first discovered Messrs
J M and Wallace lioveire and Mr J S
Xapierwero standing outside the door
talking and preparing to go home when
looking back Wallace saw smoke curling
along the ceiling Stepping in he dis
coveied lire under the stairs which
lead to the upper lloor and ran
out and gave an alarm Mr C M
Downs who liappemd to be on the
corner rushed down and closed the
doms which wcio open thus keeping
the air from fanning the ilime or the
conllagration might have been much
moie disastrous Ladders were soon
placed against the building and the up-
per lloor reached while in the mean-
time the a men chopped aw a a portion
of the stairs and a stream was got upon
the lire There was but little
blaze and consequently the densest Kind
or smoke and for a long time it was so
stilling that the men could not venture
through the building and a lantein
would give no light in it In this con-
dition the water had to be directed
wheie when it struck the hissing when
coming in contact with the tire could be
heard In half an hour the smoke had
partiallv cleared awa and the entered
to see that no lire icniained The
origin of the lire is somewhat of a
nivsterv Under the stairs wasstond
di alum ginger and other dings and
thit space was also used as a receptacle
foi paper empty paper boxes etc but
no one had been m theie anil what
should have caused them to ignite is a
haul question to solve The owner of

Tliiongh Mr C L Gates agent of the
Missouri Pacific esterday we learned
that the eompativ have dicided to re-
duce the rates ot freight from nil north-
ern points to Waco about ten per cent
Henceforth all shippers over the road
will get the beneiit of that
reduction which will be no
inconsiderable item to large shippers
f he rate on earloads on freight bv the
hundred is now the line from northern
points to Waco as to Dallas and Fort
Worth This is the ease for the first
time in the historv of Waco and is old
the beginning of the end Good
health com pi tition among railroad lines
is what benefits the shipper In what
wi the Central will respond to this
reduction we do not know
but if the evince a disposition
to opt u a rite warome liveh cutting
and slashing ma be looked for This
if it Iceu s at all is however not likely
to take place so earl 111 the competitive
snuggle for business here though not
unlike to come sooner or later Tin
reduction of which we speak was
brought about largeh through tlie
inlluenee of Mr Gates who has written
to the company several times asking
the same rate heie as given
Dallas and Fort Worth Several
of our merchants at last joined lum in a
petition asking this favor for the ship
pers of Waco In 11 few months more
we may look for man changes and the
competition among railroads inllnx of
strangers building up of the eit and
many other new features will so change
ilie commercial sstem hen that 111 a
ear more we will find ourselves almost
a new people commercial speaking
and old wns and times will be for-
gotten in the rush and bustle of tin new
order of things
