A Fakir
A firstclass fakir visited town
Saturday and held forth on the
vacant i pot back of Flato it Greens
storo Ho was a slick talker and
opened up for business by throwing
a handful of uiuklcs out in tho
crowd He is the same fellow
perhaps who visited Wharton lust
week and of whom tho Star says
Ho threw out Beverul hands lull
of nickel to tho little boys which
was appreciated beyond a doubt
and pioved effectual in gaiuini tho
confidence of tho crowd He then
offored his belts for salo and re
marked whenever any amount loss
than a dollar was given in exchange
lor a belt he would throw tho
money out into tho crowd and in
this ho kept his word He then
wanted to know how many there
weio present who would give him a
dollar Several responded and he
at onco doubled the amount given
him and returned it all to the
crowd so it can be seen he gave
tho anxious fellows two dollars for
their one After doing some sleight
ofhund work ho called out at the
top ol his voicetind agiiu asked
for anotbor freewill contribution
and as soon the crotyd thought
they understood tho aUto of affairs
money commenced to fly Irom the
humbugged throng to tho slick ar
tiit and he had fully one hundred
dollars of tho peoples monoy Of
course all through he was going to
double up again and it would be a
great investment Justbcforo this
however he displayed a large roll
of bills and the people know ho
was wellfixed At this juncturo
the fakir asked the people if they
were in his placo what would they
do with all this money Some good
old darkey said Why Id keep
it dats what Id do Tho fellow
leplied that was what hed do too
and had the driver to start to-
wards the depot where ho woud
tako tho next train theirtbnut due
hut as he drove of from the well
fooled crowd ho said Just tell
tham you saw me Ho was not
molested and wont on towards
Houston leaving tho penplo edu-
cated on this score until another
opportunity presents ilsolf Of

Tho Gonzales Inquirer has the
following to say about tho accident
to Mr Kokernot at tho Fitzgerald
House last week The fire was
caused by tho explosion of a lamp
Mr L M Kokernot had retired to
tho room to goto bed He attempted
to blow out tho lamp when it ex
ploded scattering burning oil over
the bed and room Mr Fitzgciald
heard the confusion and rushing to
tho room found Mr Kokernot cut
oil from the door by flames Mr
Fitzgcral urged Mr Kolsernot to
cither go through the llamps or
jump o it of tho window Mr Ko
kernel was forco by flames and
smoke to jump out of the back
window It was a fall of about
fifteen or sixteen feet Ho was
picked up itionsiblo and also con
sidoiably burned It was thought
for a time that ho had been ser-
