McMurry WAR WHOOP Sept. 9 1988
'The Movie Man'
tells how It's done
BY BRENT OSTOS
Ycsllll It is the Movie Man back
to review the movies that will be re-
leased in the Abilene movie market.
What a sccction we as consumers
have this fall in that market. The
summer had its ups and downs and
fortunately most of the downers have
slipped into the moss market of video
rentals. Unfortunately too many of
you were suckcrcd into seeing the
commercial trash which infested the
theater screens for months at a time.
But before I go any further in this
review I vould first like to be able to
explain how I categorize movies. For
me there arc four groups of movies:
commercial trash the commercial
movie the drama and the film.
First there is commercial trash
which should never be seen. It is a
wonder how these movies were ever
financed. These include movies like
"BacktothcBcach"'Poltcrgiestin"
and "Porky 's." I do not waste my time
reviewing commercial trash. Abilene
unfortunately has quite a bit of com-
mercial trash in its theaters. The sec-
ond group is the commercial movie.
This type of movie injects in the audi-
ence asenseof self gratification. The
bad guys get what they deserve and
everyone else lives happily ever after
all in two hours. Movies like "Die
Hard" "Predator" and "Star Wars"
arc films that have nothing to of fer but
escapism and they do thcirjob well.
The third movie type is the
drama. To me these are over budg-
eted "Made for T. V. movies." These
type of movies arc shown on Sunday
nights. The drama usually contains a
broken family a drug addiction a
murder or a trial. There arc those
dramas that ore worth watching
movies like 'Terms of Endearment"
Broad Cast News" and "La Bamba."
But one is able to watch this type of
movie on T.V. and be able to feci the
same sense of intensity he would
have felt in the theater.
Finally there is the fourth type
ofmovic that I consider Film. This is
the tlu'nking and intclcctual movie that
is written directed scored and edited
artistically. "The Last Emperor" "A
Room with a View" and "The Un-
bearable) Lightness of Being" arc re-
cent examples of this type of movie.
This type of film touches an emo-
tional cord whithin the viewer. Sight
and sound arc overwhelmed and that
is worth the five dollars at the box
office.
The point of reviewing movies is
simple economics. Is themovic worth
the time and the money? Should one
waste five dollars on a movie or one
dollar on a rental? The Movie Man is
here to help moke that decision. At
this particular lime the only movie
actually worth five dollars is "Die
Hard." "A Fish Called Wanda
"Tucker" Married to the Mob" and
"Coming to America" arc all good
but are only worth a two dollar and
fifty cent matinee. "Die Hard" is full
of fun excitement and thrills. A very
satisfying movie to say the least
Next time I will have a full review
on a movie. I just wanted everyone to
know first time out how I go about
analyzing and reviewing movies.

not really static." Citing the work of
two marine scientists Dr. Kim urged
the students to think about the fact that
"even beaches don't stay the same
they arc migrating not eroding."
Keeping that thought in mind Dr.
Kim said we "have to welcome and
celebrate the wonderful changes we
must make" and resist the changes
that ore harmful.

breakfast. Sixty percent of the people
who said they like the cafeteria food
"sometimes" cited breakfast as the
reason they don't like it more. A uni-
versal statement used to describe
breakfast was "awful."
Foods that rated high on the "like"
class were dessert and the salad bar
the latter of which received very high
marks.
Most students felt there weren't
enough entree choices.
Stay tuned for further details and
possibly another poll later in the
semester.
