When you're invohed in so many different nrens of
the school you often don't get the opportunity to meet
people outside of our particular field of interest
But as an nspit ing y oung extra-curricular activities
major 1 have had the opportunity to meet one of
McMurrv's finest faculty members and one many of you
don't know

BRUCE
s. . i
Ah last sunesti't came to a close my lips suddenly
burned v uh an inner desire to play the trumpet again
so I joined tin- McMuiry Band Here I finally met Mr
Michael R Ban the sometimes stiunge-looking man
who leads the McMurry bands
I soon found out that Mr Barry was one of those
teachers that tin t emitting brochutes always brag
about a teacher that can-s " His entire concern is
alwa& w ith his students and he docs CAKE what hap-
pens to them To many. Mr Barr is almost like a
second father
This concern was trul exemplified last week on the
band's tour to New Mexico and Arizona The band
somehow was fortunate enough to be stricken b inci-
dent alter incident of foul luck and mishap Mr Barry
was convinced that his famed ' black cloud' was follow-
ing the h uui tv o buses along the highway But. his
total woir w.m not -bout the bioken down truck or the
depleting finances- Kathi r. it was that his kids were not
hn mg-i good time' This lnsmueyou was-nottbecase
The trip w i. n bl isi "
This concern for the band s happiness often trespas-
sed on his own nnjovment of the trip The band was
scheduled toent in a small info in Flagstaff Arizona He
had diid(d the group in halt to avoid overctenvding
But even with a5 people the booths were packed and
the w nitressen were i uniting w ild So Mr Barry started
set u g saladb tillinj tea glasses and dipping ice cream
to speed up tin proct s Bv the time the hccond group
had aim st (mithed he fmullv got tu sit down ind eat
hunselt He was finll sure that the band wut happy
and he could 'hi n lake care of himself
Anothet area in whih Mike Barry excels as a teacher
is in trust of hi-students He truly believes that his kids
cun pettotm well h t fun nd tu Christians all u the
same time Bui he doe not subset ibe to dictating the
group a set codeol tults to behave by ' Von all know the
things that McVti-r. College Mandator ' headv.ae- the
group Well w. r iv.prcf tiling McMurry College and
that me msliHi w - re t-prest ntmg whni it stands t'ras

and can thf mtmbiu of tin band have no desire to do
nnythitit to disappoint The Bear
The Band used to be n tight fellowship of students
back in the day - of 'Pi of " Ray mond Bynutn Under Mr
Bum's leadership it is returning to thot form
Michael R Burr puts up with a lot to keep his icpu
tatton as a to.ichei who care- ' The Band is not always
the easiest gtoup to got quiet or settle down enough to
play a seuuiis conrr it
But the man is a fino tt ihute to the McMuiry faculty
and the 'lungs MeMuny College stands for He truly
LOVES hi 1- id and be wants them all to turn out for

campus" 'Well not quite but
there is a building on the cam-
pus that wiii built along the
same architectural lines ns
Westminster Abbey What one'
Radford of collide
It is really amazing There is a
great wealth of information
about the old buildings on
McMurry campus Of course
Radford is not really all that old
The $600000 building was a
gift of the late Mrs J M Rail
ford who donated the center to
McMurry in the memor of her
luihand. J M Radford
The Radford Memorial Stu
dent Life Center built in the
late 40 s and dedicated on Oc
tober 10 1950 is unique among
the other buildings on the cam-
pus Dr Harold Cooke whose
administration. Radford was
built under had very definite
ideas what the new building
would be like First of all it
would be like no other building
on the campus hi tire the (iothic
stvle architecture (Modified of
course i
Second Pr Cooke wanted
Radford to line up w ith no other
building on the campus There
fore it was set at un angle to the
othci building
thirdly. Radford was to lie
huilt on the highest point of the
campus which is where tt
stands today
Di Cooke s determination

The next tune our parents

they are right Radford was in
f act used as a church once Before
Aldersgate United Methodist
was built the members used
Radfoid for sen ices
lhey had exclusive rights to
Wednesday evenings and Sun
dav morning and evening
Some other interesting facts
about Radford were also unco-
vered Did you know that at one
time the first (loot mow known
to uv as the Sl'Bt was a game
room and the bookstore vv as once
a two lane bowling alley with
moth rn equipment no less
At one tune adjoining tin
game room on the east dtrecllv
below the stage was a practice
room large enough to accommo-
date a symphonv orchestra tn
rehearsal 'I hat at ea is now used
as a storage area foi the books
tore .supplies
There was at one time a con-
ference room located in the
towei. that contained the old it-
coieW of Stamfotd College the
prt (lessor ot McMuriv
Hit rest of the building n
ii. tuns much the same todav as it
was then
Thole was. for a long time
plans to extend Radford on the
Northwest and Southeast sides
These wings were to have
housed the student center the
fin aits department and possi
hlv administrative offices
These plans were nevci iictunllv
cat rie d out but they are show n
in the architects ongin.il dr ivv
