in-law and brothers-in-law and two
hired men. At one time she did
not leave the ranch for three years
so busy was she at home with her
many chorea.
When she and her husband came
west to Palo Pinto County in cover-
ed wagons, there were no fences
upon the range. All grass was
free. She remembers the first wire
cutting and the hard feelings exist-
ing between those ranchmen who
believed in free grass and those
who believed in fencing the range.
When her husband first fenced Lis
land, it was often cut, and his horses
often wandered away and kept the
hired men busy rounding them up.
They drove 400 head of horses
with them when moving to this
county.
When they first settled on Dotson
Prairie, Strnwn was just a mere
village with one store operated by
Mr. Dillahunt, grandfather of Rob-
ert Hinkson of that city. The
Strawns and Stuarts were among
the outstanding citizens, and once
owned the land where Strawn now
is, Mrs. Brothers said. Mineral
Wells at this time was only a tent
and covered wagon city. Palo
Pinto was a thriving cow town, the
center of the cattle industry of
West Texas. ....
Mrs. Brothers is 72 years of age.
She has 26 grandchildren and 3
great grandchildren. Her husband
died eleven years ago.
