Christmas Eve: "... As you can sec it's the official NFL
football of the 1977 season ... the year that he took 'cm all the
way
Gregg was talking about his most prized possession his
Roger Staubach autographed football. This football had been his
incentive to work out at the gym everyday his motive to sweat
endless hours on a practice field in hopes of making that final
step - finally making it into the pros. He had been a two - year
starter at the University of Colorado a successful one at that.
But success had been a rare experience since his college
graduation in 1988 as rare as a steady income. Regardless of the
scarcity of income he was able to scrimp and save forty-seven
dollars and sixty-three cents . . . Here it was Christmas and a
mere forty-seven dollars and sixty-three cents was all that he had
to spend on his beloved wife Holly. He was fifty dollars short of
being able to afford "the dress" the dress his wife envied every
time they visited Pricilla's dress shop. Pricilla's Boutique was
tucked away in a quaint shopping center within walking distance
of their tiny one bedroom apartment. The inventory consisted of
the finest designer gowns and dresses in town. The dress looked
as if it were made to to go with her favorite brooch the brooch
that had been passed down from generation to generation and had
finally been given to her by her mother.
Holly was a law clerk for Douglas and Douglas Associates.
Although she had spent endless hours researching law books for
cases she had never quite made that final step on the "lawTfirm
ladder" - presenting a case before a jury. Her vigorous work was
not done just to place herself in a higher paying position on the
firm; she was also working overtime to buy Gregg a special gift
for Christmas. She had already decided what to give him. She had
found a magnificent display case in which she could place
Gregg's autographed football his inspiration.
It was no ordinary football to Gregg; Holly knew that better
than anyone. But little did Holly know how many nights Gregg
actually spent sitting in his armchair holding his football
admiring his football and even talking to the football as if it
would talk back to him and answer the question "Will I ever
make it into the pros?"
... All these thoughts flashed into Gregg's mind as he
approached the dealer the one to whom he would sell his prized
possession.
"But Sir! As you can sec Roger signed the official football
of the 1977 season ... the year that he look 'cm all the way."
"O.K. Fifty dollars that's my last offer."
Disheartened he gave up his football; eagerly he awaited the
fifty dollars. Not a minute after he received the money did he
wait. He immediately got into his car and drove to Pricilla's. His
sleep that night was restless. The anticipation of wailing to sec
Holly's face when she saw the dress was what made the seconds
seem like hours.
Christmas morning finally arrived! Hurriedly Gregg delivered
his present to Holly. Holly opened it. SILENCE. Then they
realized what they had done. Her enthusiasm was dampened as
she showed Gregg the display case which she bought with
money from the selling of her precious brooch.
They looked in each other's eyes and without a single word
both had experienced the true meaning of Christmas.
"... It is more blessed to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35)

Devotional.
By Connie Haynes
How would you feel if
it was your birthday and
the whole world celebrated
it but no one even
thought about you?
This year even more
than any before it disturbs
me to sec so much
emphasis put on the
material aspects of the
holidays and so little put
on Jesus the One whose
birth the holiday was
created to celebrate.
. I actually wonder if
some people in the
country if they read this
devotional might even ask
me "Jesus? What docs
Jesus have to do with
Christmas?"
So often during this
season we get so caught
up in the shopping for and
receiving of gifts that we
totally forget about the
real meaning of
Christmas.
The real reason we
celebrate is because nearly
2000 years ago a baby
was born who would give
up His entire life to bridge
the gap people had made
between themselves and
God. He made it possible
for us to please Him and
live in fellowship with
Him when we could never
do it by our works.
The giving of gifts to
those we love is good but
on Christmas day this
year let us not forget the
greatest gift of all- the
one that Jesus gave to us
simply for the asking.
And let us not forget
the gift He really wants
from us- the only thing
we really have to give the
One who truly owns
everything- ourselves.
