Proposed changes in the
general education program of
Howard Payne were approved
unanimously by the Board of
Trustees at their regular fall
meeting last weekend ac-
cording to Dr. J.W. Cady vice
president for academic affairs.
Also the board authorized
President Dr. Ralph A. Phelps
Jr. to employ a consultant to
study the new program to in-
sure that it is in keeping with
accreditation standards.

Gambrell Street Baptist Church
in Fort Worth will be the

based general education
program and doing away with
the major-minor concept.
Students will be required to take
introductory courses in
physical science life science
Bible art literature music
history government business
psychology sociology and
current world affairs. An area
of concentration and a core in a
field of specialization is also
offered by the program. The
core will be a minimum of 24
semester hours and at
maximum 36 hours.

held Monday through Friday
Nov. 3-7. Dr. Jack Bottoms of
the HP Music Department will
be in charge of the music.
Services will be held Monday
through Friday at 9:40 a.m. and
Monday through Thursday at
7:30 p.m. in Mims Auditorium.
"Dr. Gregory is one of the
ablest and most qualified men
we've ever had in our pulpit
during revival" said Bruce
Peterson director of Religious
Activities and Faculty advisor
of the Revival Committee. "His
church has a large percentage
of full-time vocational
Christians. He's well aware of
the needs of the type of students
that are at Howurd Payne" he
explained.

A total of 128 hours will now
be required for graduation.
According to Dr. Cady the
action of the board was final
but Dr. Phelps was given the
authority to make any changes
needed after the consultant's
study. The consultant will be
hired to study the program to
insure that it meets the ac-
creditation standards of the
Texas Education Agency and
the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.

Special activites planned for
the week include a get-
acquainted reception a faculty
prayer breakfast a student
prayer banquet and a 24-hour
prayer chain.
The reception will be held
after the Monday evening
service on the lawn adjacent to
Mims Auditorium weather
permitting. If the weather is
bad the reception will be held inc
the Veda Hodge cafeteria.
The faculty prayer breakfast
will be held Tuesday morning at
7 00 and the student prayer
banquet will be held Tuesday

The first graduating class to
be affected by the program will
be the Class of 1985 said Dr.
Cady. The program will in no
way affect any student
presently enrolled in the
university as all students will
graduate under the catalog in
effect at the time of their ad-
mission he explained.

Memorial services for Kerry
Kinsey Howard Payne junior
who died early Homecoming
morning in a one-car accident
were held Tuesday in chapel.
Funeral services had been held
Monday in the First Baptist
Church of Junction with burial
in the Junction Cemetery.
The accident occurred at
DIA forum
"Mixing of politics and
religion in the Middle East" will
be the topic of discussion at the
second Democracy-in-Action
(DIA) sack lunch forum to be
held noon Monday Nov. 3 in
the snack area of Guy D.
Newman Hall.

However a student may choose
to graduate under the 1981-82 or
any succeeding catalog if he so
desires.
"This is a great victory for
Howard Payne" said Dr.
Phelps after the meeting. "We
are moving in the direction of
providing a breadth of
education that will prepare
students to live in the 21st
century."
In other action the board
approved a three-year contract
for Dr. Phelps.

DPS Trooper Bobby Duvall
reported that Kinsey was driving
alone in a 1974 vehicle nor-
thbound on U.S. Highway 183
and was 4.7 miles north of Early
when the car struck a guard rail
and bounced off. Duvall said the
guard rail sheared off went
through the car and struck the
driver. Kinsey was pronounced
dead at the scene by Justice of
the Peace Joe Bob Morgan.
A 21-year-old physical
education major Kinsey
transferred to Howard Payne
this fall after graduating from
Ranger Junior College. He was
born Oct. 4 1959 in Junction
and was a Baptist.
Survivors include his father
Horace Kinsey of McGregor;
his mother and step-father Dr.
and Mrs. Ronald Graham of
Junction; a sister Vicki June
Hoggett of Glenrose; his
grandparents Mrs. EdnaVaden
of Fort Worth Lester Vaden
of Temple and Winnie Kinsey of
Mason; his great-grandparents
Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Vaden of
Temple.
