Dr. Phelps should be good for HP
By Mcdc Nix
Kdllnr
As one of only a few students who has met
Dr. Ralph Phelps HP's new president I think
1 ought to nive some of my impressions from
my interview with him last Friday.
I was impressed with him and his expertise
especially in the area of dealing with
university problems. He related several
stories from his lG-year tenure at Ouachita
and those stories sounded like Howard Payiie
today.
I like his straightforwardness. He never
backed off from a question I asked and an-
swered several before I even asked them.
One reason I was impressed is because he
said he was once editor of the Baylor student
newspaper and is very sympathetic to the
problems of the student journalist. Believe
me there are problems.
He is optimistic about HP's future
especially the building program. However
any new president wants new buildings and
moves toward them. This is one chore that
may take a while to complete but that is just
part of the university business.
Student involvement will be counted on in
his administration. Dr. Phelps worked closely
w ith student body presidents at Ouachita and
wants to do the same at HP starting with
establishing student committees to
correspond with faculty committees.
I think he will have an open administration
in which student will have access to the
president's office and I perceive he is a true
leader.
Dr. Phelps had many of the qualities I
would want in.a president for Howard Payne if
I were doing the choosing. Experience
straightforwardness a good rapport with
young people a vision for the future and
leadership qualities are what I would want.
I don't want to sound like an advance man
for him but I am optimistic Dr. Ralph
Phelps should be good for Howard Payne.

What do you think ?
HP students agreeable to the draft
By Norma Gomez
Kdltorial Assistant
Should the draft be rein-
stated" Should women be
required to serve or be drafted ?
If yes in what capacity?
Recently a group of Howard
Payne University students were
asked their opinions on these
questions. They may be
questions with which some
would rather not deal but they
are issues facing us today. .
The majority of students
interviewed agreed if necessary
the draft should be reinstated.
Others might strongly disagree
with this as no one wants to see
it become a reality but few
spoke against it. Most students
say if our country were to go
into war then the draft would be
necessary in order to have a
strong military force. Below are
some responses to this
question: Do you think the draft
should be reinstated0
"Yes I really wish we had
never stopped the draft in the
first place. The draft caused
many people to keep their ideals
realistic about the threat of war
and reminded us that we have
an obligation to our country"
said Melissa Roberts.
"I think if the President feels
it's necessary then I'm for it
because he is our leader. What
good is it if we electa leader and
we can't follow him- " said
Karen Wistrand.
"If we're going to defend
America we're going to have to
draft. I think a volunteer army
won't work. We need to start
training now" Oma Coker said.
'I think we should resume the
draft. In order to have a strong
military. Strong affirmative
action should be rken. A
volunteer progrr n n't func-
tion well enough" s-ii Hector
Cantu.
"I believe we've got to defend
our country by defending them.
We need to be ready and stop it
before they get to us." I don't
want it to happen but it would be
a lot safer." said Joy Horton.
"I think we should start
drafting and pick it back up.
For our own security mainly. I
think we are getting behind and
therefore feel it's necessary"
Daniel Cisneroz said.
"Yes. Mainly because if
people want the opportunities
and abilities in a free
democratic country they ought
to be willing to sacrifice in order
to uphold the laws and prin-
ciples our forefathers founded
our country on." Jana Sanders
said
"I think the draft is good. But
by serving as volunteers I think
it would be better" said Allen
Bell.
"If we're going to have a draft
I think our intentions should be
stated clearly. Under the
present circumstances my
answer is no" Steve Throck-
morton said.
The second question on this
survey seemed to be a more
controversial issue but most
agreed requiring women to
serve or being drafted was fine
as long as it did not mean they
would face combat situations.
Women could serve in hospitals
clerical jobs factories or other
areas which are important to
our nations security. Do you
think women should be required
to serve or be drafted If yes in
what capacity? Here are how
some students answered:
"I'm for it. There are many
areas in the military where
women would be highly useful.
It is their patriotic duty just
like it is for any man." said
Janene Meiske.
"If necessary yes but not
behind the line. I know I'd panic
and a lot of others would to. We
could do desk jobs and other
jobs" Dawn Faccilonga said.
" If the draft becomes
necessary we should go with it.
However women shouldn't be
drafted as potential fighters and
warriors. They shouldn't be out
on the battle field" said David
Herod.
"I think women shouldn't be
drafted. I don't think they can
handle it" Curtis King said.
"I don't know. It seems like
separating men and women is
too much trouble not
necessary. Women should serve
in other jobs such as clerical
work or factories unless they
really wanted to go." said Bill
Miller.
I think women shouldn't be
drafted. I know if I were
married I wouldn't want my
wife to go" said Mike Eklund.
"Yes but women shouldn't be
behind the line. Men can handle
it better and are better
equipped than women" Lisa
Invrey said.
"I don't think anyone should
be drafted especially women"
said Jim McGown.
"I think drafting women is
fine but shouldn't be put behind
the front line. I don't think
women are emotionally
prepared for such a task" said
Belinda Polk.
"Yes but they should serve in
desk jobs or other such like
jobs. The draft is good because
a lot more people will enlist and
go into it with a more positive
attitude" commented Sylvia
Saavedra.
"I think if women want ERA
then equal is equal in war time
as well as peace time" Brian
Compney said.
"Volunteer yes draft no.
Women could volunteer to work
behind a desk and manufac-
turing military unions but I
would not want them to fight
beside me" said Carl Williams.
Surveying students at random
showed a variety of attitudes.
Since it is extremely difficult to
interview every student at HPU
this survey can only offer an
overall attitude felt throughout
the student body.
The draft is not an issue to be
taken lightly. How would you
answer these questions?. Think
about it.
