The Yellow Jackets reboun-
ded nicely from the tough loss to
Abilene Christian and defeated
Angelo State Monday night 86-
69 the same score by whichthe
Jackets beat ASU Saturday
night a week ago in Brownwood
Coliseum.
HP never trailed in the game
and led by 10 at the half 44-34.
In the secona half the
Jackets led by as many as 18
but Angelo narrowed the
margin to 10 with eight straight
points and with 5:J2 left it was
74-134 HP.
The Rams could oni' manage
five more points because the
Jackets went into the lour cor-
ners and got some easy layups
to pull away again. "This was
the best we've worked the
spread all season" head coach
Chester Story said after the
game. "Before we have tried to

ACU HP prove nothing as Wildcats win in
By Mede Nix

Howard Payne and Abilene
Christian did not prove who
which team is the best in the
conference but the two have
proved they know how to play
ex citing basketball. Tour-
nament was fair play for ACU
as they defeated HP 67-
65 Saturday night before a
sellout crowd of over 4000 in
Brownwood Coliseum.
Just last Monday night the
Jackets had defeated ACU by
two on its own home court so it
may take the conference tour-
nament to provide a rubber
game for the match betw cen the
Wildcats and Jackets.
It was almost an instant
replay of the last game between
the two which came down to a
Mrshall Davis shot with 10
seconds left to ice the 56-54 vic
smash Rams
the four corners.
ASU coach Ed Messbarger
had said before the game that
the key to stopping Howard
Payne was to stop Marshall
Davis. Davis didn't have a 28-
point night like he had the last
time the two teams played but
he did have 16.
Since the Ram defense was
concentrating on the outside
game with Davis and Greg Bon-
ner the Jackets worked their
offense inside to Ronnie Phenix
and Joe Babincaux. Phenix hd
20 for to lead all scorers while
Babineaux added 16. Gary
Hopkins had 13 11 in the second
half to break a mild slump.
Monte Sutton had 17 coming
off the bench to lead ASU the
only Ram scorer in double
figures.

man who had 27 against the

tory. Gary Hopkins took the last
shot for HP this time with six
seconds left but it wouldn't fall.
Assistant coach Billy Williams
bemoaned to a wrong set-up on
the inbounds which gave ACU
the lead in the first play.
A free throw by ACU's Jeff
Johonson had put ACU in the
lead 66-65 with 42 seconds left
and HP worked the ball around
until 14 seconds were left and
then called time out. Hopkins
drove into the lane on the in-
bounds play after the time out
put a left-handed shot that
refused to go in the bucket and
ACU's Rodney Fedell reboun-
ded to all but end the game.
Williams said they had hoped
for Gary to drive into the lane
and drew a foul. "But what
really hurl was the out-of-bounds
play." HP had the ball
and the -lead with 48 secords to
of the HP defensive effort. "We
comboed him a little We kept a
man in front of him and behind '
him. Our defense was to keep
the ball away from Tyler"
Story elxplained. Tyler finished
with nine.
The Jackets shot 55.8 percent
from the floor or 38 of 58 at-
tempts and hit on 10 of 15 free
throws. The Rams made 30 of 71
attempts for 42.2 percent. HP
also outrebounded the Rams 47-
28. HP has defeated Angelo State
seven times in a row dating
back to January 1978. The
Jackets' re cord is now 16-1 and
6-2 in the conference while the
Rams are 5-15 and 1-7.
The Jackets played East
Texas last night and will be on
the road for three in a row
against Southwest Texas State
tomorrow Texas A&I Monday
and East ' exas Thursday.

passes in the backcourt. Ran-
dall Moore knocked the ball
away and Rodney Fedell was
fouled by Kenneth Wallace on a
layup. Fedel hit the first free
throw and missed the second

Johnson was fouled on the

he hit one of two for ACU's 66-65
lead with 42 seconds left.

we were out of timeouts" ex-

Women's team
shocks No. 1 ASU
The Lady Jackets basketball
Learn pulled off what has to be
the greatest upset of its short
history last Thursday night
when the women defeated the
number-one ranked small
college team in Texas Angelo
State University 54-51 in the
Nathan's-Angelo State Tour-
nament first round.
Angelo State had a terrible
game as they shot only 22 of 78
field goals. Tough Jacket
defense and opportune
rebounding gave the women the
54-51 upset.
ASU had an early 21-13 lead
butthetady Jackets came back
to outscore the Rambelles 19-5
the rest of the half to have a 32-
26 halftimc lead.
The Rambelles tried to come
back in the second half but IIP
answered each spurt with a
rally of its own.
After ASU pulled to within one
at 48-47 Mary Mackey lilt four
crucial free throws and one field

Coach Billy Whitman said
after the game "It was a great
game for us. We had lost three
in a row anJ we were really
struggling."
The Jackets then lost a
heartbreaker to Hardin-
Simmons 69-67 as Cowgirl
Charlotte Dehnel sank two free
throws in the last three seconds
of play.
Although HP was behind to H-
SU by five 38-33 at the half the
I-ady Jackets had fought back
to take the lead and control of
the game. Foul trouble then hit
the Jackets as Prlscilla Bar-
nett Renee Scott and Camille
Fedell hit the tying free throw.
ACU led 36-31 at half and
Williams said "They made us
play their game the first half. We
shot just 25 times they put up
35 and we had some turnovers
that really hurt."
Something else that really
hurt was that the Jackets shot
53.6 percent (26 of 49) from the
field and was 13 of 19 from the
foul line. ACU was 27 of 66 for
40.9 and also 13 of 19 from the
charity line. ACU made jsut one
more shot and won the game.
"We didn't do the things it takes
to win games" Williams said.
It probably won't be remem-
bered but wing Greg Bonner
had an excellent game hitting
20 points and grabbing 15
rebounds. Marshall Davis had
14 Phenix 12 and Babineaux 11
for all the Jackets in double
figures. Hopkins had only two
Scott fouled out. HP was
whistled for 29 fouls while
Hardin-Simmons only had 10. H-
SU also made 27 free throws to
HP's nine. In the end that was
what ruined the Jackets'
chances of advancing to the
semifinals. Priscilla Barnett led
all Jacket scorers against H-SU
with 24 while Camille Scott had
17 and Mary Mackey 13. Dehnel
canned 36 to lead the Cowgirls.
Texas Tech eventually won
the event over TCU Saturday
night 94-434.
IIP did get to play one more
game and defeated Texas A&I
58-46 to run its season record to
10-5. Balanced scoring was the
key with Priscilla Barnett.
Cheryl Cappas and C?mille
