SOUTHERN BAPTIST YOUNG PEOPLE
Poll shows conservatism
SAN ANTONIO (BP) -Southern
Baptist young people
are conservative both
religiously and politically a poll
here shows.
Participants at Freedom 76
were offered an opportunity to
state their preferences from
among hopefuls for the
Democratic and Republican
presidential races.
Former Georgia Gov. Jimmy
Carter and President Gerald
Ford won handily defeating
Alabama Gov. George Wallace
and former California Gov.
Ronald Reagan.
"There was a lot of interest in
the voting" said Harry N.
Holiis Jr. of Nashville coor-
dinator of the citizenship area in
the conference's Freedom Hall
where the voting machine was
located.
"The machine was used
constantly. At one point we had
35 or 40 people lined up to vote"
Holiis said adding that 539
young adults took part. That
represents about 10 percent of
he participants.
Resignations... continued from

ditions there. Skinner cited
mattresses that were in poor
shape was the major gripe.
In final business Freshman
Senator Steve Jones reported
on the Leadership Lab
scheduled during mid Febuary.
Jones said he had contacted
Mrs. Kirchner a Galveston Ball
High School student council
sponsor to perform the lab.

"I think the vote reflects
renewed interest in the political
process" he said noting the
activism of the students in the
1960s "often was activism for
the sake of activism."
It was followed by a period of
apahty and withdrawl In the
early 70s he added.
"We now have growing out of
that withdrawal a political
interest which is more
healthy" he said. "It grows out
of a Christian commitment a
determination to be involved in
solving the problems of the
world."
Holiis cautioned against
"reading too much into the
results of the poll."
"I do believe we can draw
some conclusions but it was not
a scientific sampling because
many of the registrants did not
get to vote. It should not be
taken as an absolute final
assessment of how all young
people feel" he added.
"It's interesting Carter beat
Wallace and Ford defeated
Reagan. In both cases the
"Mrs. Kirchner is state wide
acclaimed and she knows her
business. She is willing to come
to Howard Payne free of
charge. She only asks that
senate supply transportation
and a place to stay while in
Brownwood" commented
Jones. Despite these apparent
pluses senate did not vote to
approve her selection as the lab
leader until a later date.

Dear Editor
This letter is in respect to the
past resignations of class
senators. The last resignations
makes the total for this school
year 7. I a class senator
working with my colleagues and
watching them would like to
inform students to think twice
before electing certain students
to represent them. There are
senators serving who take no
active part in discussing
matters before thm except to
vote along with the majority
not taking a stand on issues they
believe in. Other senators nit
pick and question every thing
before them. Some senators not
ail-that have resigned filled one
of these postions and did as they
should have. Some senators
taking no active part ini he-
meetings should follow the
same route as those that have
resigned.
There are senators serving
who are working hard for you
and representing you being lead
by a responsible and reliable
Student Government President.
I urge each student to attend the
Senate meetings and evaluate
each senator and the service
they are doing for you.
Sincerely
Randle H. Skinner
Rm. 616 Sid Rich.
moderate conservative won"
Holiis noted.
Hoiiis a staffer of the
Southern Baptist Christian Life
Commission also noted the
moderate conservatives
overwhelmed moderate liberal
or liberal candidates.
For instance Hubert Hum-
phrey drew 74 votes and
Edward Kennedy 63. Fred
Harris probably the most
outspoken liberal drew only 15
votes.
"Southern Baptist young
people are essentially con-
servative both religiously and
politically. There's no question
about it" Holiis added.
"Southern Baptist young

servative both religiously and
politically. There's no question
about it" Holiis added.
Holiis said many of the
conference particpants ex-
pressed displeasure with the
choice of candidates however.
He quoted voters as saying:
"I backed into the voters
booth."

Dear Editor:
As a student of Ho ward
Payne University I want to
make known by views con-
cerning SUB presentations on
campus.
While I find all of all of
SUB's programs disdainful I
find that the entertainment and
film committees by far have not
brought hardly anything that
has glorified the name of the
Lord.
Being a "Christian"
university I believe the first
priority of the SUB should be to
bring Christian oriented en-
tertainment to campus.
In singling out a SUB event
which typifies what 1 am saying
was last Saturday night's
Shades of Ebony concert. I
found this concer to be of poor
taste.
Furthermore if the SUB
continues to bring second rated
entertainment to campus SUB
can find my ten dollars
elsewhere.
I hope and pray this situation
changes.
"Seek ye first the kingdom of
God and his righteousness and
all these things shall be added
unto you."

"With the great problems
we're facing in this nation it's a
shame that better people aren't
running for president."
"The options weren't very
good."
Holiis called the voting an
"educational experience."
"Many young people have
never been in a voting booth.
They seemed to really enjoy the
educational value of it. It also
had another effect. Many of
them started thinking about
their choice of a presidential
candidate. Many of them are
considering who they will
support in 1976" he added.
The outcome of the
presidential preference poll:
DEMOCRATS: Carter 145;
Wallace 101; Humphrey 74;
Kennedy 63; Henry Jackson
34; Lloyd Bentsen 28; Birch
Bayh 19; Morris UdaU 17;
Harris 15; Sargent Shriver 11;
Terry Sanford 6; Milton Shapp
1.
REPUBLICANS: Ford 291;
Reagon; 167 John Connally 60.

I tend to agree with Mr.
Caraballo. While SUB can be a
great organization It hasn't
really brought programs to
campus that are representative
of a conservative student body.

Dear Editor:
They did it again. Yes Greg
Berry and the Howard Payne
Symphony Band created a
spiritual sensation at the recent
State Evangelism Conference
in which some 10000 were in
attendance. Their playing
singing and directing thrilled
everyone's souls. More than
that however their beautiful
rapt attention to the program;
their follwoing of the scripture
readings with open Bibles their
note taking; and their quiet
conduct blessed all who were
present.
Greg was also equal to the
occasion when only half of the
BSU Choir arrived because of
bus trouble preventing the other
half from reaching Ft. Worth.
They sang beautifully and were
supported by the band in such a
way that all hearts were lifted.
We heard more comments on
our Howard Payne group than
on any other participant on the
program. One person was heard
to say "Greg Berry is God's
gift to Howard Payne
University. The reply was
"yes and to our State
Evangelism Conference."
Amen!

Dear Editor
I want to commend the office
of the dean of students and
specifically Assistant Dean
Cheryl Wilson for the initiation
of the weekly schedule of events
distributed around campus and
known as "HPU Program-
ming." It is a most helpful and timely
tool for everyone who wants to
know when and where it's at.
Sincerely
Raul C.Garcia

raised by a white elephant sale
last month that netted the dorm
council about $55.
