context of social and intellectual as well as geographic landscapes. The
committee encourages proposals that reflect the diversity of thought
that informs western history and those persons involved in its pursuit.
Western agricultural life, military experience, concerns of people of
color, environmental matters, comparative studies, and international
issues are of particular interest for this conference, which meets on the
American-Canadian border.
Proposals should include a brief two-page summary of prospective
papers, with participants' names, addresses, and telephone numbers,
and a short paragraph on each presenter, chair, and commentator. The
committee will assume that all those whose names appear in the propos-
al have agreed to participate. The committee especially invites individu-
als-professors, public historians, independent scholars, or graduate stu-
dents-who do not have a full session organized to submit proposals for
consideration. The deadline for submission of proposals is September 1,
1996. For more information, contact Anne M. Butler, Department of
History, Utah State University, Logan, Utah 84322-0710, telephone

Clippings
One of life's great pleasures is paying tribute to a good friend. One of
the best TSHA friends that any of us has had is Colleen Kain, administra-
tive assistant at the Association since 1974. As many of you know,
Colleen will be retiring on August 31, 1996, after being associated with
Texas history during five decades-from the 1950s to the 1990s-and so
it is most fitting that the Winedale Historical Center Advisory Council
recently selected Colleen as the 1996 recipient of the Ima Hogg
Historical Achivement Award for outstanding contributions to the cause
of Texas history. It is a well-deserved honor.
Colleen's connections to Texas history began in 1957 when, as a
freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, she began working part-
time as secretary to the history department's graduate advisor. Within a
few years Colleen was serving as administrative assistant to the depart-
ment's chairmen, including Robert Divine, William H. Goetzmann, and
future TSHA director Joe B. Frantz, a position she held until 1968. Her
connections to Texas history were strengthened during those years by
working with some of the department's Texas history stalwarts, includ-
ing Walter Prescott Webb and H. Bailey Carroll, both former directors
of the Association. As secretary to the graduate advisor, Colleen worked
with and befriended a generation of UT history graduate students,
including David McComb, Bob Calvert, and Jim Pohl, all of whom went1996
