Clippings
More than 550 persons attended the Association's ninety-eighth annu-
al meeting at the Stouffer Austin Hotel in Austin on March 3-5 to help
acknowledge the contributions of Texas's best-known empresario,
Stephen F. Austin, and to participate in the numerous scholarly sessions
and workshops, banquets, receptions, book exhibits, and auctions.
Robert H. Thonhoff of Karnes City took office as the Association's fifti-
eth president, Felix D. Almarfiz Jr. of San Antonio was elevated to first
vice president, and Cissy Stewart Lale of Fort Worth was elected second
vice president.
Former president Alwyn Barr of Lubbock would have completed his
term on the Executive Council but for a change in the by-laws, which
were adopted at the Houston meeting in 1993, having former presi-
dents remain on the council for two years after they complete their term
in office, rather than one. Cissy Lale, Al Lowman, and J. C. Martin com-
pleted their terms on the Council, and John Crain of Dallas, Dora Guer-
ra of San Antonio, and James McPhail of Austin were elected to the
Council. John Crain, former director of both the Star of the Republic
Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos and the Dallas Historical Society,
is vice president and history grants officer of the Summerlee Foundation
in Dallas. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and Southwest
Texas State University, he is a longtime member of the Association and
has served on many committees, including the Program Committee. He
was instrumental in organizing the Summerlee Commission on Texas
History, the findings of which were published in 1992, and in his capaci-
ty as history grants officer for the foundation has visited every corner of
the state during the past three years in an effort to encourage history ap-
plications to the foundation.
