earning his doctorate in the political science department at the Uni-
versity, held various academic and government positions. Thereafter
he rose to the position of Mid-Atlantic regional director of the Office
of Economic Opportunity. Exclusion from the seminar in business
psychology and salesmanship evidently had no detrimental impact on
George Allen, who prospered as a successful businessman, member of
the Dallas city council, and local judge. At age thirty-seven, Heman
Marion Sweatt entered the University of Texas law school, four and a
half years after his original application. After two years of failing
grades and disappointment, he dropped out. He later earned a master's
degree in social work from Atlanta University and capped a career in
community service as assistant director of the National Urban League's
southern region.51
In an episode rich with ironies, a final irony is worth mentioning.
Henry E. Doyle, who had incurred the NAACP's disfavor by attend-
ing the basement law school, became the first graduate of the law
school at Texas State University for Negroes. The attorney general
even cited him as the fine product of segregated education. Official
pride in Doyle quickly evaporated, however, once he passed the bar
examination and began filing civil-rights lawsuits against the state.52
