In Scottish Capital on the American
Credit Frontier, economic historian
W. G. Kerr has delved deeply not only into American business records, but
even more extensively into the archives of many a company in Edinburgh and
Dundee. He invests with life and character the men who committed their
money to America's frontier. He explores the ideas and intentions, the busi-
ness methods and techniques of these men, and how they shaped the develop-
ment of large segments of the West.
In particular, Kerr examines the impact of three companies on the develop-
ment of one particular state-Texas.
The book that Kerr has produced is a frontier epic with a difference-an
account of the West in terms of credits and debits, collateral and interest. Yet
it is an account somehow akin to the West of cattle drives and six-shooters,
or new-laid rails and fresh-broken sod.
Definitely, this is a book to expand our knowledge of the growth and develop-
ment of the American Frontier.ISBN 0-8761-035-9
