Southwestern Collection
This past summer the Barker Texas History Center displayed an
exhibit on the black heritage of Austin. Through photographs, docu-
ments, and artifacts, the exhibit presented a brief overview of the con-
tributions of Afro-Americans to the growth of Texas, as well as to
the capital city. The first black man to reach Texas was Esteban, a
Moorish slave, who arrived on Galveston Island November 6, 1528.
A ten-year-old mulatto girl became the first black resident of Austin
when she came as the maid in Alexander Murchison's household in
Dr. Chester Kielman, librarian-archivist of the Barker Texas History Cen-
ter and Mrs. Ada Simond and Mrs. Janie Harrison, chairman and co-
chairman of the black heritage project, examine the portrait of an early
