it. I obtained it from Mr. Gamble's circulating library.

obtained the Book, shown you, or as the proprietor of the estab-
lishment from which it was obtained?
Answer. I got the Book from that gentleman, naming the accused.
The Judge Advocate declined further questions. Cross examined
by the accused.
Question. Had you any conversation with Mr. Gamble about the
character of the Book in question?
Answer. I had not, Sir.
Question. Did you make your own selection from the library?
Answer. I did, Sir.

Question. On what terms did you obtain the Book in question,
by hire or purchase?
Answer. By hire, Sir, 50 per Month I think were the terms.

Inf, a witness on the part of the prosecution, was duly sworn and
deposed as follows:
I was on the guard of the Ist Relief from 8 O'clock to io
O'clock P.M. I walked slowly by the back door in the yard and
saw something white; as I perceived this white object, I turned
around &e halloed, walking towards the door. As I approached I
found the white thing to be the prisoner. I took hold of him,
when he said to me, "Let me go home." and pointed out the road,
by a waving motion of the left hand. I replied to him, "go inside
and ask the Officer." When I was relieved at io O'clock, I informed
the next relief and told him to be on his guard, 8c also informed
the officer of the guard.
By the Judge Advocate.
Question. Did the Prisoner make any attempt to get away forcibly?
Answer. I cannot assert that, but the probability is, he would have
done so, had I not watched him so closely.
Question. Did the Prisoner make any offer of a reward to let him
go home?
Answer. No, Sir.
