Abel Parker Upshur Conservative Virginian, 79go-z844 (Mad-
ison, State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1963), by Claude H.
Hall, associate professor of history at Texas A and M University, is
a study of a prominent Virginian in the neglected period of
political decline in Virginia immediately succeeding the era of
Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. In 265 pages, 49 of
which are notes, Hall provides insight into the man, particularly
the forces operating upon him. Upshur was Secretary of State for
about eight months from June, 1843, through February, 1844,
and during his tenure he manifested a great interest in the annex-
ation of Texas. This work presents little new to the annexation
question other than the background forces influencing Upshur.

Joseph F. Combs, Farm Corner: A Collection of Little Essays
on Nature (San Antonio, The Naylor Company, 1963), has pre-
served a collection of articles written under the heading "Farm
Corner" for the Beaumont Enterprise. Subjects range from asa-
fetida to zodiac signs, from Old World goddesses to collard greens
and hog jowl. The author bases his ideas on historic fact. His
viewpoints are interesting, and his style is easy and relaxed.
