Rip Ford's Texas
By JOHN SALMON FORD
Edited with an Introduction by Stephen B. Oates
John Salmon "Rip" Ford arrived in Texas a short month after the
Battle of San Jacinto, and during the next sixty years he participated in
practically every major event in Texas history. Doctor, lawyer, surveyor,
newspaper reporter, elected representative, and, above all else, soldier
and Indian fighter, Ford enjoyed a busy and an active life that reflected
the interests, ambitions, and enthusiasms of most of his fellow Texans.
But unlike many who helped to steer the state through its turbulent early
years, Ford sat down in his old age to record the events through which
he had lived.
Here, published for the first time, is Rip Ford's account of Texas,
limited by its editor to accounts of events in which Ford himself par-
ticipated. This residue, edited into readable form, is a clear and vigorous
personal history of Texas-exciting, sometimes humorous, always in-
teresting. A publication in "The Personal Narratives of the West" series,
edited by J. Frank Dobie, it is an essential book for all lovers of Texas
history. $7.50
