Southwestern Historical Quarterly
year enrollment has been about two hundred. There can be no
doubt but that more Texas history should be taught in Texas high
schools and in Texas colleges.
The Mississippi Valley Historical Association held its fifty-
sixth annual meeting at Omaha, Nebraska, on May 2-4, 1963.
Speeches of interest to Texans were "The Effect of Cotton Acre-
age Reduction on the Tenant Farmer in the United States," by
David E. Conrad of Southwest Texas State College, and "The
National Progressive Movement as a Regional Struggle for Com-
petitive Advantage: The Case of Texas," by James A. Tinsley
of the University of Houston.
Other participants from Texas were Joe B. Frantz of the Uni-
versity of Texas, who presided at the Phi Alpha Theta Luncheon,
and George Wolfskill of Arlington State College and Michael G.
Hall of the University of Texas, who acted as commentators at
certain sessions.
The Junior Historians are again active in San Antonio, with
the establishment of Chapter No. o207 at Providence High School,
Sister Jan Maria, Sponsor. Sister Jan Maria was sponsor of the
chapter at St. Anne's School in Houston before coming to San
Antonio. Co-sponsor for the group is Miss Frances Donecker, who,
for many years, has been one of the Junior Historians' most
diligent and conscientious workers. After a long absence from
active sponsorship, Miss Donecker is heartily welcomed back into
the Junior Historian organization.
The Association was highly pleased to receive the following
note from Kenneth F. Neighbours, professor of history at Mid-
western University:
I would like to express my appreciation of the January issue of
the Southwestern Historical Quarterly. This contained a large body
of information on topics in which I am very much interested. This
will prove to be one of the most-sought-after issues of the Quarterly
or any other historical periodical, I believe.
