whole self into it wiin an iuc
It hasn't been mentioned In the
Collegian yet bilt there Is a box nt
the door of the chapel auditorium In
which stories for the pnper can be
placed In case the writer doesn't see
a member of the staff or doesn't wish
to be known to the public. (Maybe
this should have started out that
way.)
A freshman was heard the other
day to say she almost decided not to
come to Daniel Baker this year be-
cause she was afraid of the ghost
here being natutally afraid of ghosts
anyway. But she later found out the
ghost was only the college spirit and
came on. (The Joke wasn't very good
but she had the gray hairs pulled out
nicely and it was really almost presentable.)

LUCK
It's been a week since Mrs. Trapp
made her talk in chapel but only a
day or two ago I heard someone else
talking about It and one gathers that
she will be asked for a return engage-
ment not long hence.
That reminds one (It really doesn't
lemind me of it but I've got to start
this some way) of the story about
Hollywood. It is said that everyone in
Hollywood is forever putting on an
act. Even waitresses mechanics and
beggars go about their work acting
as if they were In front of a camera.
And Lionel Barrymore has a dog they
say that barks "Woof! woof! a thou-
sand times woof!"
Fl!H LET'S STICK
By A Pith
Every freshman or most freshmen
within the first week or two of col-
lege has a most urgent desire to re
turn home.
I letnembcr last year I started to
college with more of a notion of re-
luming home than staying in college
the result was a trip back home for
the year. This year I was afraid of
the same thing so immediately upon
arriving at school I paid part of my
board bought all books pens and
clothes necessary. The other day I
got down In the "dumps" and would
have given my eye-tooth to thumb
down a passing car and travel to the
paits unknown. But being mostly
Scotch I simply had too much In-
vested to leave I either had to stay
spend more and learn more or lose all
1 had pent. I'm staying.
Of course there will be times for a
while when you think you haven't a
friend In the wot Id and that no one
cites for you but stay awhile and
you'll change.
Get acquainted; make yourself
known to do this you must use every
means possible. When called upon to
speak or do something put your
vigor
and enthusiasm you possess. If you
don't possess any energy then make
yourself create some. Find something
that interest you and do It.
Just think what a forceful unit the
freshmen would be If they pulled to-
gether. What If every freshman had
arisen at once the other night when
Dr. Davis called upon some freshmen
to talk wouldn't that have been a
beautiful show of class spirit. I don't
blame you I am as much at fault aa
any one but I'm just saying what can
be done Is not at all impossible.
Sure fellow fish! It's going to be
a great year. By the time school is
out let's hope we are all smiles have
sweethearts friends and know every
body. You just stick and you'll see.

A Broadway theatrical expert once told Katherine Cornell that
she should pack and go home for she would never become a star.
She remained in New York diligently playing small parts until
the search began for an actress to take the feminine lead in "A
Bill oi Divorcement." She received the part bv chance and
well the rest is theatrical history. Now she is 'the first ladv of
the American stage.
Luck? No it was not luck but a determination to succeed
and a diligence of effort behind that determination that put her
where she is today. She remained on the job until a break came
her way then she was alert and ready to take it.
Two football teams have battled on even terms for almost four
periods and the spectators have conceded that the score will re-

nis own territory ; the opposing center sees an opening through
which he rushes to block the kick. The home team recovers the
ball in the end zone to win.
Luck? No alertness of mind perception and action caused
that center to make the most of his break when it came. What
would have happened if he had assumed the same attitude as the
crowd in the grandstands? Doubtless he would have failed to win
the game.
Fellow students we should follow the same plan of diligent
correct work and alertness of mind. We are in college for a pur-
pose or at least we should be. That purpose is to be educated
in order to become better citizens of our country. We have re-
ceived our breaks a break that has cost some one' a sacrifice. Are
we going to seize upon our opportunity and make the most of that
break or are we going to pack up and go home ?
Are we willing to be content wit ha tie in our battle with life?
The world does not need such people any more than the coach
needs a player who is satisfied with a draw. We have our chance
now. so let us make the most of it. Remember the man who wins
is the one who will be ready to block the kick.

two classes. One class will be physi
cal geology which will deal with the

study of the Grand Canyon will be a
part of this course. The other class
will be the archaeology which will
consist of a study of the American
Indian with emphasis on the Indian
of the Southwest. These classes will
be open to citizens of the town who
wish to attend. Later in the year
courses in historical geology and ele-
mentary paleontology will be given."

Several members of the freshman
class are getting more and more fa-

lot to be acquired (in one way and
the other) during the coming few
weeks from all indications. But this
Is certainly not the place to advise

mean. For you know .people who
live in glass houses shouldn't live in
glass houses or something. Well it's
a good way to learn to spell promi-

pus. It is said (Ling Po) that a per-
son doesn't really appreciate those
good old American family names like
Jones Smith Day Joe Sam etc un-
til he gets to college and has to spell
such names as Davenport Montgom-
ery Snodgrass Whittaker and some
others.
