OUTLOOK
ENCOURAGING
FOR FOOTBALLTHIS YEAR
A IIIGGKR AND BETTER TEAM IN.
KUUKN- A GREATER NUMBER
OF VICTORIES ON GRIDIRON.
(By Walter B. IHgginbotham.)
Last year we predicted that it
would be the greatest year for ath-
letics that Howard Payne had experi-
enced in many seasons and now as
wo think of the great showing we
made we ca nnot help believing that
we were right. We will admit how-
ever that our prediction was not
wholly without uncertainty as to Its
fulfillment for wo could not buse our
hopes and Judgment on past experi-
ence. But this year we feel not the

slightest fear or hesitancy in prophe-
sying for we are sure that we ure
not laboring under any false delusion.
Our record last year was indeed
gratifying and we are proud of it for
it has given us something to build
our future hopes upon. But even it
was not what we thing we deserve
and what we expect to make It this
year. We had somo great contests
last season and gained Home vic-
tories worthy of notice but we feel
now that we are going to do much
more this year.
You may wonder why wo are so
optimistic over the outlook at such an
early date. In the first place we
know that we are growing stronger
and rising steadily in every phase of
athletics. We realize that our prog-
ress is beginning to dawn upon other
institutions of high rank and that
they no longer regard us as a mere
tool for practice games but as an
able competitor. We know that there
19 a better feeling for athletics in
Howard Payne than ever before. With
these facts before us why should we
not be confident of the future? But
our optimistic views are not based
wholly on our past achievements.
The energy with which our men are
working the ability of the men who
are training them the wide interest
and enthusiasm of the student body
the hearty coorepatlon of our support-
ers and sympathizers and the general
athletic atmosphere that prevails
around our institution all give assur-
ance that we are going to have a
winning season.
We know that our football pros-
pects are better this -year than ever
before. Practice has been in prog-
ress now for two weeks. On account
of the late arrival of football suits
Coaches Copas and Ford have ex-
perienced some little difficulty and
disadvantage but the work has been
going on just the same. More than
thirty men are out for practice every
day and both coaches express them-
selves as being highly pleased with
the nucleus with which they have to

The Howard Payne Girl
Do you think that 1 could describe her?
Paint that beautiful picture in words?
I could easier write with exactness
The warbling notes of the birds!
If 1 coujd picture the brilliance
Of sunbeams reflected from pearls
I might then be tempted to paint her
As the queen of all College girls.
"Is she blonde or brunette?" What a question!
I'm sure I can't tell you so there!
There's something that outstrips in 'beauty
The tinge of her eyes and her hair.
Who could notice the shade of these silken locks?
Their tinge may be auburn or else black as night;
Her eyes well I know not their color
But they gleam with a soft mellow light.
"Her voice?" Did you ever hear sir
The mocking bird's song in the dale?
Have you heard the notes of the merry brown thrush
As he sings to his mate in the vale?
Then you have heard her speak sir
Or something as like it you've heard
As the voice of a merry schoolgirl
Can be like the notes of a bird.
"Her form?" Now why do you ask me?
There's not a word painter that's sano
Would attempt to give you a picture
Of the girl in old 'Howard Payne.
Had I the pen of an angel
Dipped in the heavenly dew
I might then be able to give you
A cut of her form that's true.
One never thinks to notice
Whether she be stately or tall ;
He is only conscious when with her
Of a beating heart that's all!
O she is as lithe as the daisy's stem
Graceful as any wild flower that grows
And her face well It far surpasses
The charms of the honey-dewed rose.
How well I remember the evening
As we sat 'neath the clear starry skies!
I saw as I watched her contentedly
A soul beaming through her bright eyes.
My bouI was awakened from slumber
It was music to hear her speak
While the moonbeams played on her tresses
And the soft breezes kissed her cheek.
There! .Why do you question me further?
I can't paint that picture in words;
I could easier write with exactness
The warbling notes of the birds!
If I could jot down the vision
That I've tried so often in vain
I'd give you a beautiful portrait
Of the Girl in old Howard Payne.

work and they are confident of de-
veloping a strong team. The squad
this year is made up mostly of ex
perienced men. However many of
them are new men in Howard Payne.
Several of last year's- men are back
and all are showing up well in their
old positions.
Goodwin who played quarter the
latter part of laatj season will prob
ably remain in his old place. Charlie
(Bootjack) Moore is back and will
probably land a place at tackle. Pat
Green and iyrch Lewis the mainstays
on the endslast year are working out
and will doubtless be found again in
their old positions. Lawrence Lewis
a last year's second team man is back
and is showing up well at center.
