wood Texas as second class mail matter.

As has been the custon of the Liter-
ary Societies for years at the clo.se of
school in June editors were elected to
edit the Howard Payne Monthly the
piesent school year. However at our
til .st meeting we resolved ourselves in-
to a deliberative body and by motion
the name of our college paper was
chunged from Howard Payne Monthly
to "The Prism" and to he published
weekly. We have long since felt the
need of a weekly paper in our school.
Our experience has been that few stu
dents were really interested in a liter-
ary mugazine. Few of them would sub-
scribe and less read it. Perhaps no
one was to blame. Wo tried to get
students to contribute ai tides which
they cared little about writing. The
most natural thing then would be to
expect other students to care little
about reading such articles.
In every respect this adition is not
typical of what the others will be.
Once each month there will be a liter-
ary section that will contain the arti-
cles or poems of those that feel they
have special talents in any particular
line. In the main however the col-
umns of the paper will bo used in the
discussion of conditions as they exist
in the school in the hope that such dis-
cussions will bring about better condi-
tions. We hope that this paper will
from time to time contain such articles
as will enlist the support of the student-body
in better athletics student
self-government better literary soci-
ties and an increased interest in Y. M.
and Y. W. C. A. work. These are vital
things in college life and touch each
student so wo feel if this paper in any
way helps to make them better it will
in a large way serve the school and
student-body and that it will prove
the wisdom of the stuff in changing
from a monthly magazine to a weekly
paper.
The slogan of the student-body is to
make this the greatest year Howard
Payne has ever had. All of the or-
ganizations are placing live men at
their head and are enthusiastic in the
work.
The Senior class organized with
Glynn Brooks president; Annie Shcl-
ton secretary.
The Junior class organized Wednes-
day of this week with Horace Sholton
president; and Ossee Maodgen secre-
tary. The althletic association in its first
meeting voted to have a season ticket
to all the inter-collegiate games dur-
ing the year. Such a move met with
the hearty appioval of the student
body and already there have been
more than one hundred of them sold
yet they have been out only a short
time and it is several days until the
lirst game will be played in Itrown-
wootl. It is evident from the way tickets
are selling that we will be better pre-
pared to handle the financial end of
athletics in our school this year than
we have ever been. This has always
been a problem with us. We tried
other ways of financing our sports but
none before has nromised to bring as
much maney and yet as satisfactory
Athletics are primarily for the stu-
dents of an institution and Mippoit
of same should come largely from them
Ily having a season ticket wehave been
able to put the price of the games in
reach of every one and all will soon
lealize this fact.
Another benefit will be the strong
support of the teams by the student
body. This we have realized for a long
time to be a very great need
It matters not how good our
teams are and how well they have
been coached they can't play well un-
less they are supported by the school
that they represent. We hope that
every student in school will buy one of
these tickets because it is a bargain
to them ai'd at the same time they are
making better their school by stren-
gthing athletics in it.
COLLEGE BRIEFS
The students of Howard Payne have
voluntarily intsituted the long desired
season ticket for athletic games. The
purchase of a ticket is purely optional
with each individual but one begins to
think it compulsory when it is noted
how fast they are being sold.
It would be difficult to give the
brief happenings without making men-
tion of the enthusiastic spirit that per-
vades everything from our athletics
up. The students are all pulling to-
gether in every thing and are we be-
lieve the most zealous body of stu-
dents Howard Payne has over had.
