There comes a time in the life
of ail oolumn writers when the
inventive imagination expires
defunnt. At this time the writer
may allow hlmwlf te tilde allff
pery into the slough of mem-
ories. Whieh reminds me of a
very sad remember. It's also
pretty brutal. So III tell it.
It's about my pet turtle with
"Hot Springs Arkansas" painted
in red on his back. Only he
wasn't brand new by this time
anymore and his back was more
like ot pring Aran. That m
iteelf was pretty sad. But I

the froaen TV dinners were for
the starring Bakimos in the
freeaer. She's all right for a
mother.
I was pretty much of a philan-
thropist even at that time so I
moved over.
Then I beard this crunch. Like
paeans and nuteeaekew make.
Whan Mom lifted her foot I
noticed that Mttte oie Ot was a
little flatter than usual.
I wish he had cried or called
her a elumey brontoeaurus or
something. But he didn't He
Just lay there. Real still and kind
of bleeding at the edges.
I remembered how Mom had
soaked my foot when the Puss
and Boots can fell on It. So I put
poor ole flat attll bloody Ot in
the bathroom sink.
But I guaaa turtles aren't
much like feet. Because he )uat
floated there. Plat still and
bloody.
Then I put some Ivory Snow
in because of what Mom alwaye
said about the proximity of
eleanllneai to Oodtinass. And I
figured what ole Ot needed waa
a miracle. By that time the water
had awiriy pink streaks from
Ot'a bleeding at the edges. The
Ivory Snow made pretty pink
bubbles.
Maybe ole Ot thought that
was funny. Bseauss Httle

to think he died laughing.
But lately I've wondered h he
were really laughing because of
the bloody pink bubbles. Or
because he too was a phHanthro

enough. Or maybe beoauae tor-
toises don't always win the race.
