ACC Debaters Invited
To District 3 Tourney

the 11th team from Abilene
Christian College to be selected
for th National Debate Tourna-
ment District III qualifying
Sender and Morrow were
ranked team number three In a
field of nine teams that will
meet In Fort Worth Friday and
Saturday March 13-14 to deter
mine which four teams represent
District III in the 24th National
Debate Tournament to be held
at the University of Houston
April 16-18.
The National Debate Tourna-
ment began at the United States
Military Academy at West Point
In 1947 and was conducted by
the academy for 21 years. Since
that time it has continued under
sponsorship of the American
Forensic Association.
District III comprised of
Oklahoma New Mexico Texas
Argamas Louisiana and Missis-
sippi is one of eight districts In
the nation. The ACC debate
coach Ed Brown has served as
ehalrman of District HI for the
past two years. As such he wHl
direct the district tournament at
Fort Worth and will represent
the district on the national
committee at Houston.
He has served as secretary of
the national committee since last
April.
For 13 years District III has
selected its four representatives
to the National Tournament in a
special round-robin qualifying
tournament. ACC has been in-
vited to the qualifier 11 times
and has succeeded In earning
seven Invitations to the National
Tournament.
Sanders and Morrow submit-
ted a record of 67 wins and 23
losses for the year showing a
71 win record. Among their
special recognitions for the year
are: first at Wlohlta State Univer-
sity in November; third at Texas
University in December; third at

State University earned Sanders
and Morrow an Invitation to the
fourth annual Debate Tourna-
ment of Champions to be held at
Illinois State University. April
9-11. This k the third year and
the fourth team from ACC to
earn such an invitation.

rict Tournament (in order of
ranking) are: Houston Okla-

Texas Tech Northeast Okla-
homa State College Texas Uni-
versity Central Oklahoma State
College Northwestern Okla-
homa State College and Houston
Baptist College.

Enters Contest
Robert D. Hunter vice pres-
ident for public relations and
development at Abilene Chris-
tian College announced his
candidacy for the Abilene City
Council Thursday Feb. 27.
Hunter's candidacy for the
norths! de seat was announced
with that of Dr. Gordon Ben-
nett McMurry College president
for the southside seat. Hunter
filed for the position currently
held by Dr. John C. Stevens
ACC president. Hunter and Ben-
nett are sponsored by the
Citizens for Better Government.
W. N. Tindell CBG chairman
said selection of the two men
began Dec. 2 with the annual
meeting of the CBG and prog-
ressed through the Nominating
Committee and to the Board of
Directors. Ninety-six names were
screened by the Nominating
Committee according to Tin-
dell. Hunter was named to his
present position Sept. 1 1969.
He served as assistant to Dr. Don
H. Morris ACC president from
1961-1969. Hunter Joined the
ACC staff In 1956.
He serves as director of the
Abilene Downtown Rotary
Club director of the Abilene
YMCA director of the Abilene
United Fund director of the
Abilene Philharmonic Associa-
tion and director of the Abilene
Zoological Society.
Hunter graduated from ACC
in 1952 with a BA degree in
business administration and has
completed all of the course work
on a master's degree in business
administration.

President Says W Club
To Double Membership
W Club. Abilene Christian
College women's honor sorority
will lnorease its membership in
the coming year according to
Jeannie Johnston president.
The organization is celebrat-
ing its 60th anniversary this
year having been organized in
February 1920 under the lead-
ership of Daisy McQuigg Sewell.
Mrs. Sewell was the wife of the
late Jesse P. Sewell then presi-
dent of Abilene Christian Col-
lege. There were 17 charter mem-
bers. The 1969-70 club has 23
members. Miss Johnston said
membership has been held below
26 in past years to meet the
requirements for affiliation with
Mortar Board the national
honor sorority for university
women.

Patty Thomas a senior from
Austin will be exhibiting her art
works March 14-20 in the main
room of McGlothlln Campus
Center at Abilene Christian Col-
lege. The senior art exhibits will be
held throughout the spring
semester. Miss Thomas's show is
the second of the keries.

than Mortar Board" said Miss
Johnston. "I would like to see it
keep that thrust. W Club is not
Just an honor club It is a
Christian women's honor club."
Mbs Johnston said she would
like to see the club have as many
as 60 members. "That's double
what we have now but still a
fraction of the women on
campus. There are so many who
are deserving."
The purpose of W Club Is to
"inspire girls to noble woman-
hood and to recognize girls who
have rendered outstanding serv-
ice to ACC" said Mrs. Forrest
Harlow co-sponsor of the club.
"Members are selected on the
basis of character scholarship
leadership ablility dependability
and integrity."
Miss Harlow said the club has
a fund and for several years has
given a scholarship to a deserving

over 750 past members of W
Club and 80 or these live in
Abilene. Several are part of the
ACC faculty and staff: Mrs.
Harold Wilkinson Dr. I ma Clev-
enger Mrs. Lewis Fulks and Miss
Callie Faye Milliken.
Mrs. Ray McGlothlln also
serves as co-sponsor. Other offi-
cers of W Club are vice president
Sheryl Schouten; secretary Jerl-
lyn Pfeifer; treasurer Shirley
Huff; and "W" editor Marcia
Prior.
