Wildcat Sportlight
By JOE M. YOWELL
As the Texas conference goes down that final home stretch it
is interesting to observe comparisons between this year's Wildcat
five and the team of 12 months ago.
This year's goal-conscious squad has made a total of 1057 points
in the ID games played to date. That is an average of 55 points
per contest. All this in contrast to a defensive record of 978 points
for the opponents or an average of 51 points per contest.
Last year in the 10 games thatwere played the Purple made
a total of 983 points for an average of 51 points as against an average
of 43 points for the opponents. The latter made a total of 830
points.
In Texas conioronco play tho record Is oven more Impressive
In tho seven games played to date (written prior to McMurry gamo)
the Cats havo totaled noarly 60 points or better in each contest.
Season totals for conioronco play reach 414 points. Conioronco
oppononts havo made a total of 317 points or an averago of 45 points
Individual statistics to date for the 19 games reveal that Dee
Nutt is leading the scoring parade. The hot-shot Arizona guard
has made 107 field goals and 23 free shots for a total of 237.
Dub Winkles and Bill Tool are tied for second with 138 points
oach whilo Sam Stovall with 124 and Bill Grounds with 119 round
out tho scorers with moro than 100 points.
The percentage of free throws made is 54 per cent as the 205
points scored free gratis came in 373 tries.
The Wildcats have committed 356 fouls to date.
Lots of talk going around the campus about the recent "story"
in tho Reporter-News to the effect that the Cats were in as the
conference champions. The story which came out of the Associated
Press in Fort Worth on Sunday and Monday had little basis for
its truth in regard to the clinching of the pennant for ACC.
As tho Cats havo three games loft to play and Howard Payno
has lost two games (this was before McMurry gamo) tho Yollow
Jackets stand a mathematical chance to lake tho flag. That would
bo if wo lost tho three games including ono to Howard Payno and
tho Brownwood school did not loso any moro. One moro victory
would clinch a lio for the championship whilo two moro victories
would givo tho Purplo comploto hold of tho throno room. That is
of course if Howard Payno did not loso any more gamos.
If that should happen then ono victory would give a full share
of tho litlo to tho Wildcats.
It is interesting to note that no one not even Coach Morris
can recall when a team went through the entire conference schedule
without a loss. TWC lost one last year and Southwestern one the
year before. The last time the diadem was on the Wildcats' head
was in 1938 and the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets turned the
trick that season. Not only in the Texas conference is this true but
in the other leagues in the Lone Star State. Coach Morris com
mented that last year's University of Texas five was one of the
very few that he knew of that had won all of the Southwest
conference games.
On the side there is no comment from this quarter in regard
to the NIBA playoffs. Conference play comes first.

Cats Claw Kangaroos
73 -58; Torpedo Bucs
With Scuttling 48-38
By ROBBIE ROBINSON
Hitting the top of their seor
ing power the ACC Wildcuts
out-shot the Austin Kangaroos
last Tuesday night 715-58 to win
their sixtli conference ganu
with no losses.
The game was supposed to be
fairly close but the Cats were in
danger only once after the first
few minutes of play. The Jump-
ers pulled up within five points
of the Cats in the second half
but Dee Nutt opened up a bar-
rage that shut the Cats far into
the lead
Austin Starts Fast
Austin took the tip-off and in
about 15 second sank a field goal.
Then Nutt steaming like a het-up
bull plunked four successive fmld
goals to set the Cats afire Later
Tecl dropped two beautiful field
goals in to make the score 22-17
The half-time scoie was 38-28
Nutt made 10 points the first
half while Jim Wilson and Jen-
kins shone for the visitors.
Kangaroos Rally
Following the exhibition of
guls' tumbling Sam Stovall made
a crip shot to start the Cats roll-
ing again. The Kangaroos then
rallied but the Wildcats were not
to be stopped. The Jumpers were
shooting long shots and were not
connecting. The Cats' speed was
the factor that ruined Austin'
vaunted goal defense.
Nutt High Scorer
The second half included fast-
moving breaks shooting rebound-
ing and several fouls. Bill
Grounds was clicking to set the
Cats ahead 55-41. Teel fouled out
with the score 01-48 and John
Clardy relieved him. Tecl kept
Wilson of the Austiners well
guarded the first half but the all-
conference Jumper turned into
his old self the second half to
mesh 19 points during the game
Nutt dropped in 11 field goals
from every angle and four fiee
shots to walk off with top honors
20 points.
