Spear and the syndicated cartoonist Ben Sargent

The quality of the staff is excellent and it should be
an exciting year.
The feature editor has had experience as a Brand
staff writer. Steve Winkler brings with him a unique
light-hearted sense of humor.
Our Sports editor Is also one of a kind. This is Jim-
my Pogue's first year on the staff but he brings an ex-
ceptional writing quality and has refreshing' sport
ideas.
A new columnist and cartoonist Jeff Baggett joined
the staff last week. He has wit and a zaniness all his
own. Clay Canslor is also going to be a staff cartoonist.
The HSU paper wants to be representative of the
campus. The editor Lonna Bartley wants to make
the paper a success. This is her first year at HSU and
the editorship of a paper. This coming year in all the
papers endeavors we hope they prove to be a
challenge and a definite success.
Slide presentation
brings awareness
A continuous slide show will be shown in the lobby
of Moody Center Tues. Sept. 20. This will give
students an opportunity to see and hear about the
issues to be voted on by citizens of Abilene Sat. Sept.

voted on. A member of the city council will be present
to lead the discussion.
Tues. evening at 5:30 a forum will be held for
students in Beckham Lounge of Moody Center. The
slide and tape show will be presented and questions
will be answered by a city council member.'This will
be an excellent opportunity for new students to learn
about Abilene and its needs" said Dr. Julian Bridges
professor at HSU "and it will better prepare returning
students to vote intelligently on the bond issues Satur-day."
The Brand would like to invite anyone interested in
working on the paper the opportunity to write or work
on the production of the paper. Come by the office in
the basement of Moody Center. Everyone is welcome.

letters to the editor. Letters must be submitted

ment of Moody Center and place in the editor's

instant rapport
lonna bartley
Let me introduce myself. -I am in the majority
because I am one of the many new faces on campus
this fall. The fact is many of the returning students are
complaining hediously they feel like freshmen again
new faces and fresh starts. However instantly we
"new kids" in the dorm have something in common.
That is that we are hearing the same redundant ques-
tions. I sometimes feel like a POW. "Give only name
classification social security number major and home
town." And if identification is needed a pictured meal
ticket will suffice.
When speaking of POWs all on-campus students
immediately have something in common. My room
looks like I am living in an army barricks. I would love
the interior decorator who decorated Room 45 in
Hunter to design my home someday. I like three
shades of depressing green-beige. The most special
part of dorm life is the piped-in music. I live right
across from the bathroom and the precious instru-
ment the commode runs at all hours of the day and
night.
I am proud to say that I am admitted into another
elite group on campus. I am a transfer student. I really
resented being asked if I was freshman during the first
week of school. Surely with a few years of college
under my belt I didn't look that confused. I am proud
to say that I have roamed o'er many campuses and at
least for a few days I know which direction my life is
headed.
The news Is in the air that it is pledging season. I can
sure relate to the pledge ribbons darting around cam-
pus. I went through a full semester of difficult ordeals
and embarrassing situations to become a full-fledged
proud member of a sorority. My favorite trick was get-
ting even with the actives. Two friends from home
were my pledge sisters. At a mixer we told the Frat
Rats we were triplets from Broome Texas . In jest we
said we had been cheerleaders Our favorite cheer was
"Sweep 'em up sweep 'em up Broome High." It was
fun being a mere pledge and pulling the wool over the
actives' high and mighty eyes. Have fun pledges!
The purpose of this column Is to have fun. I am con-
stantly amazed at the diversity of people religiously
intellectually physically creatively and athletically.
I wanted to show that wehavefsomething in common.
In the broadest realm we can develop an instant rap-
port with anyone. If we take the time and desire to get
to know the individual it isn't hard to develope a close
lasting friendship from a mutual instant rapport.
As the dimensions of a relationship narrow and the
ice is broken by those introductory questions we
began to break down barriers and come out from
behind our masks. We ultimately develope friendship.
My challenge for both you and me is "to go beyond
the surface and get to know and care for each other as
individuals.
I was a confused as freshman sophomore and
partly as a junior. I wandered on many campuses
looking for atmosphere friendliness concern
helpfulness and love of the Lord. I wasted a few years
being confused but I am here now. Let's get involved
and make this year a memorable one.
